The recent premature stoppage of the Froch-Groves fight most fans agree the ref jumped in too quickly but what about when the corner should make the call? Sims made the right call Saturday Barker couldn't go on & Barker himself made the right call (via Sims) when cornering Purdy against Alexander. Saturday showed to me a prime example of a corner getting it badly, badly wrong on the Rigo card.Anyone see Kirkland V Tapia? The ref let it go on too long but was bringing the doctor to Tapia's corner between rounds. The corner has to weigh up the fighters interests give your fighter the chance to turn it round but anytime between the last two rounds the towel should of come in from the Tapia corner imne life, one career fighters by nature need to be saved by the people that are the closest to them.
Tapia corner was criminal, he's only a 23 year old kid who could have come back from defeat but they kept sending him out for a beating. A good corner would have pulled him out after the 4th rd. Same for Magomed, he should have been pulled out after the 8th.
Agree 100% have posted about both fights both men have no quit in them brave to the point you save them from themselves. The great trainer Eddie Futch pulled out Frazier v Ali end of the 14th in Manilla he was done had nothing left.
There is nothing worse in boxing than a brave coach!!! I hate it when you see a fighter taking a needless beating because his coach won't throw the towel in. No fighter really wants to quit so it is the coaches job to save his fighter from taking punishment when there is no need too.
DaveMc It can be a fine balance at times but another recent example for me John Murray v Brandon Rios. Murray as brave as they come Rios the better fighter & also not making weight & being fined for it.He had a hard enough task anyway compounded by the weight issue & again Murray is brave as they come.
It's a tough one, but corner really should know when to pull out a fighter when clearly getting beat up. Tapia was getting beat up but he always seemed to then throw one back that would rock Kirkland... It's a good example of where the ref has and is giving the fighter every chance and the corner then needs to do their bit... To be honest we blame refs / fighters / corners / coaches it all comes back to how you see it...It appears that all of the mentioned always get it wrong and we know better. it's something that we all have to accept in boxing, there will always be times where another person see's it differently.
Tbh I think futch got it wrong in Manila - even though he had the best intentions - ali was done and collapsed before he could celebrate - Frazier was fked but still ready to go - that win may possibly have made Fraziers life better and made ali retire before getting brain damaged. could have been a different world.
Totally agree. My missus even said ''why are they letting this continue he's finished!''. His head was dipping forwards and he was throwing arm punches. They wanted to win so bad they destroyed their fighter. Tapia is finished IMO that was a prolonged beating and a devastating one. Magomed showed out 2 times in that fight as he walked back to corner. David Jackson not once looked to stop that fight. Awful... And Smoger's lack of urgency and bravery cost Tapia two more heavy punches. He deserves some stick as well IMO..
Barker and his cornerman had rehearsed their towel throwing incident. The plan was to get into the ring injured, take the million bucks and get through a round.Retire and live happily ever after. Not a bad plan,as it worked out without any investigation and it was not on UK soil.Hmmm.....:bart
It does make you wonder...would we all do the same thing? Probably! To be successful in this world you need to be a good bshooter.
Lebedev and Tapia's situations were just stupidness though Sometimes I think it matters where they are in their career, Tapia didnt have enough experience they shoulda took him out way earlier
