Lawrence was doing his sharpest work from 77-81.

So that includes the period in which he went life and death with Shavers and Norton? Interesting.

He outboxed Shavers neatly in 1977. In the rematch Shavers had that great moment but otherwise Larry kicked the crap out of him. Shavers had gone the distance with Ali before that. Some feel he should have won.. Norton was great one in his own right but yes. That was one of the great fights.
The only real performance that he had in that peak would be the Weaver fight. According to Lawrence he lacked focus fighting at MSG and Weaver's pedestrian record going in.

Larry was always consistent I do not think you can mark it down really due to poor opponents reflecting badly on a fighters true ability, He learnt as he went- as all good boxers growing old do to stay in the game, as a boxer he aged like wine, tricks and skills wise anyways. He just seemingly took something from everyone he shared the ring with and was always able to raise the bar past his athletic celling with his ever growing arsenal.

Norton was older yeah, Larry was injured and still won comfortably- Earnie had success for about 3% of the fight lol.

He also said in his book that he was recovering from the flu when he fought Weaver.

In my book it was circa 1978-82. He was n't quite the same post Cooney fight.

He was probably at his very best when he beat Earnie Shavers in 1979.

I think Larry was probably at his best in the Ali fight. Unfortunately though, Ali was completely done and couldn't put up a fight so He held back out of mercy.

78 to 82. The victories over Shavers (2x), Norton, Spinks, and Cooney were his finest moments.
