May have existed, but I never saw it in any gym in N.Y. in the '40s 'n '50s. Started to see it around '64.
Masutatsu Oyama, in his 1958 book (What is Karate), writes about hitting focus pads as though that was already an old, well known training technique...at least in Martial Arts. Boxer's must have been aware of the idea. I can remember some guys using them in the 50's. I'm not sure about before that.
d, Were the '50s boxers using pads from the U.S.? If so, can you remember their names and what gyms they trained at?
As a kid we did padwork and that was late81-early82. So if a small amateur club was using them then, it stands to reason the pros (especially in the US) would have been using them well before we ever did
Oh yeah i know that, i was just reminded of that post you made. Do you remember which one i mean? It was amazing.
Thanks, some definite proof there. Still, it doesn't appear to have been a popular exercise. You rarely saw it during training footage of that time.
I was referring to martial arts guys in the 50's, not boxers. I would think it's reasonable to think that many boxers were aware of focus pads since they were in use in the martial arts community. In fact, I knew a few local boxers who were also involved in martial arts at that time.
great picture with rocky i think pad work has been around since atleast the 1940's not sure how popular it was though i know in europe, i had coaches who coached since the 1950's and they said they were taught to do pad work, so it existed there before that
If we had a time machine, my best guess is we could go back to about 3000 BC, watch some pre-fight training, and see something being done that would look a lot like focus pad work. :yep
