In America, in the 1920s, it was baseball, boxing and horse racing. They ruled the roost, often producing front page news. I mean the front page, front page, not just the sports section front page. For you children, that last comment referred to an old school way of getting information known as a newspaper. ;)

In the 70s with the Heavyweight’s the 80s with the stars of Boxing, late 80s early 90s the Tyson era,20s with the stars of boxing. Boxing has always had its share of popularity amongst sports fans but it always seems the stars in the big fights taking place have always elevated Boxing as a whole a lot higher when they take place . Every era of boxing has had its own stars and big fights which caught the public imagination more than normal and fans still talk about them today as though they happened yesterday, that is the draw and allure of Boxing .

Boxing's always been popular in bursts. It doesn't work like other sports. There's usually zero interest at the domestic level, but every now and again a huge fight will capture the public's imagination and it'll outshine all other sports on that one night.

Depends on what division you're talking about. For the heavyweights most would say it was the 1970's.

If we believe what Hesiod wrote: the only era that falls within the rule of Cronus. Created by the immortals who live on Olympus, these humans were said to live among the gods and freely mingled with them. Peace and harmony prevailed during this age. Humans did not have to work to feed themselves, for the earth provided food in abundance. They lived to very old age but with a youthful appearance and eventually died peacefully. Their spirits live on as "guardians". Plato in Cratylus (397e) recounts the golden race of men who came first. He clarifies that Hesiod did not mean men literally made of gold, but good and noble. He describes these men as daemons upon the Earth. Since δαίμονες (daimones) is derived from δαήμονες (daēmones, meaning knowing or wise), they are beneficent, preventing ills, and guardians of mortals.
''First of all [110] the deathless gods who dwell on Olympus made a golden race of mortal men who lived in the time of Cronos when he was reigning in heaven. And they lived like gods [115] without sorrow of heart, remote and free from toil and grief: miserable age rested not on them; but with legs and arms never failing they made merry with feasting beyond the reach of all evils. When they died, it was as though they were overcome with sleep, and they had all good things; for the fruitful earth unforced bare them fruit abundantly and without stint. They dwelt in ease and peace upon their lands with many good things, [120] rich in flocks and loved by the blessed gods. But after the earth had covered this generation—they are called pure spirits dwelling on the earth, and are kindly, delivering from harm, and guardians of mortal men; [125] for they roam everywhere over the earth, clothed in mist and keep watch on judgements and cruel deeds, givers of wealth; for this royal right also they received;—then they who dwell on Olympus made a second generation which was of silver and less noble by far. It was like the golden race neither in body nor in spirit. [130] A child was brought up at his good mother's side a hundred years, an utter simpleton, playing childishly in his own home. But when they were full grown and were come to the full measure of their prime, they lived only a little time and that in sorrow because of their foolishness, for they could not keep from sinning and [135] from wronging one another, nor would they serve the immortals, nor sacrifice on the holy altars of the blessed ones as it is right for men to do wherever they dwell. Then Zeus the son of Cronos was angry and put them away, because they would not give honor to the blessed gods who live on Olympus.''

The fifties were good, but the seventies were the best! and by far! Fights were on all 3 networks every weekend, you could see,,,For Free!
Muhammed Ali, Frazier, Hagler , Cuevas, Monzon, Duran, Sanchez, Arguello, Benitez, etc. on,and on,and,on , . Ali regained his title from Spinks on national TV on ABC. Imagine that today? The 80's weren't bad either, though the big fights moved to closed circuit PPV you still had the weekend fights , plus ESPN on Thursday night and sometimes Fridays plus my favorite was USA Tuesday night fights.
So for the fans, the golden age of boxing was the 70's followed by the 80's.

Yes. Even mid 20th century and just after, boxing was popular. By late 20th century it was clearly fading.
Perhaps b/c the US was beginning to no longer dominate boxing - esp. HW div. Coincidence?

Soon (now?) only old timers will know what a newspaper is. The Zoomers enter this world from mom with an electronic gizmo in their hands o_O
