When was the last time a heavyweight with a 76 inch reach (or less) won a heavyweight title? This is aimed at a guy on this forum who was shocked Gassiev looked bad at heavyweight with a 76 inch reach.

Like I said it has nothing to do with reach, but a shortage of ring IQ. Same way jabbing has nothing to do with length of your arms but timing. If what you were saying was true then we wouldn't even have boxing matches and determine a winner just by his reach and height alone

76 inch reach isn't even that short. You were the guy that just said there is some mythical threshold of power that a fighter can't get past even if he takes all the drugs under the sun. Why don't you get lost clown your posts are straight up GARBAGE

And Wallin has a 78 inch reach. That's only a 2 inch difference you clown. You have to be trolling at this point

Andy Ruiz is the correct answer; before him it was Joseph Parker (76″).

Mike Tyson was a master at slipping tyhe jab and getting inside, no way should he have beaten those big heavies while being only 5`10 and having such a short reach, Hearns out-jabbed Benitez and Ray because of his reach, he out-jabbed everybody at 147, one punch turned his fight v Leonard around.

A longer reach is an advantage unless the shorter armed fighter can get inside the jab.

    Gassiev 76
    Wallin 78

    Ray Mercer 77
    Lennox Lewis 84

Guess who was landing the jab just fine. Skills pay the bills, among numerous other factors determining the outcome of the fight. Tall fighters fighting tall, and short fighters having to fight short is not a rigged game for the latter.

Mercer had a great chin and MSG ring was small plus Lewis was still a work in progress with Steward, there are very few fighters with a 77 inch reach or less that could have won rounds v Lewis, an 84 inch reach is huge and it showed in most of Lewis`s fights, he had one of the best 1-2`s in heavyweight history.

Yes, experience, stage of the career, skills, preparation. They all matter, on top of reach and size, all those "[..] numerous other factors determining the outcome of the fight." It doesn't change the fact that shorter or smaller men beat the bigger men through the history and it's not nearly uncommon enough to, as a result of a degree of scarcity, write off one fighter on the basis of having the reach of 76 while the other has 78.

Having to get into details of why Mercer was so hard for Lewis is in direct contradiction to your original post implying reach alone should be the determining factor of a favorite in the minds of the observers. If you want to agree it's better and easier to box tall, and that one average the statistics will favour the lanky, lengthy boxers to succeed more often, I won't argue. I've boxed plenty, and especially for less experienced fighter reach can be a morbidly dooming factor.

It is very obvious you're the type of poster to shift the goal posts whenever a valid point is made.

First you ask for boxers who won the title with a certain reach, and when some are provided you mention that the boxer "had a great chin".

Oh yeah, well how many fighters with a 76 inch reach and a great chin won the heavyweight title at midnight on Halloween?

    That's what I thought.

    Checkmate.

That wasn`t a world title fight, Mercer won the WBO title beating Morrison who lost to the longer armed Lewis easily, Mercer lost that title to an old Holmes who had a 81 inch reach and a fast jab.
