I was curious about something. During this year, we've seen a number of pretty close decisions that always went to the house or "name" fighter. And after Kellerman's speech about "the marketplace", it made me wonder how often the "marketplace fighter" won fights considered controversial by the general public. What was the most recent fight where the non-"marketplace fighter" was on the beneficial end of a close or controversial decision?

I didn't think DLH/Mayweather was considered controversial. I thought the only controversy was that it was a split decision, which was a case of the "marketplace fighter" *almost* stealing a fight.

Also, wasn't Taylor considered the House fighter at the time he fought Hopkins?

Neither one of these decisions were controversial and Mayweather wasn't the underdog regardless.

From the looks of the responses, there weren't many (or any) recently. That's a pretty serious problem.

Baldomir over Judah was a close decision and basically killed a megafight between Judah and Mayweather, at least in terms of public interest.

Williams vs. Margarito was a close decision for a 'dog against a popular Mexican fighter.

Wright vs. Taylor was a draw but I thought a fair one, when Taylor was at his peak in terms of celebrity.

But yeah, usually the more marketable guys take the close calls.

    What are the counterexamples?

Diaz from this weekend was a close call, Chad Dawson over Glen Johnson, several Jeff Lacy fights, Hatton over Collazo, Casamayor over Santa Cruz (a true robbery), Pacquiao over Marquez II (tho Pac did drop a close fight to Morales).

    What others?

All of these are 2005 or later.

Cory Spinks vs Ricardo Mayorga. Although, I thought Spinks clearly won the fight, Im in the minority on this.

Bradley getting a decision in the UK over Witter. I thought there was no way they would actually give it to Bradley given how close the fight was.

Cory Spinks vs Roman Karmazin also. I thought Spinks won this fight as well. But again not many people believe that.
