When was Vitali Klitschko last involved in a really competitive round of boxing?

I think it might be a bit more than that.

I'm not done yet, but I'm starting to feel this is pretty close to a 50.50 fight. But one that either man could dominate pretty close to completely.

The thing is - if - IF Vitali is firmly outsped and IF Haye can keep his feet under control, Vitali might look very, very old very quickly.

What do you think? Do you think that Vitali, pre layoff, would be able to handle Haye so now if Haye proves to be too much it would have to be due to ring rust, the layoff or just natural decline? I honestly think if Haye comes in with good footwork and movement, is able to close the distance and get out then that type of fighter would have always given Vitali problems.

Vitali paws with the jab to keep distance. He is tall and leans back away from punches so he knows that if the fighter is at the end of his jab, then he is relatively safe. He then counters as fighters expose themselves trying to get close. He throws short, quick and accurate counter shots. He doesn't load up because he doesn't have to. He is big enough and strong enough that any landed shot is felt and respected. But he is straight up, stiff and mechanical. So a fighter with speed, and who knows how to attack from angles, who can also go up and down is the only fighter I believe to completely out-class Vitali. He is too big so you can't bully him, he is too tough so you can't intimidate him, he's too confident so you can't frustrate him, you really have to just beat him at the sport of boxing....hit and not be hit. :deal

I like Haye........ his charisma and style are great but he will most likely get dominated. Vitali is a rare talent. He's a huge guy with good skills. I can't see Haye being able to outbox him.

Probably round 2 or 3 against Sanders.

I think Haye may be peaking - he was not desperate at 200, but he was weight-making in camp - and I think that Vitali is way past. I think we haven't seen anybody take him to the trenches since 2004 and that when if it happens in 2009 Vitali might not be able to cope...basically I just struggle to make a live challenger such an underdog in this situation. I think Haye might win. But I do think if it happens it will be down to Vitali's having slipped/rust.

Yeah. Haye is lacking some of the things neccessary to "out-class" Vitali in my view, but this doesn't mean he can't beat an older version.

His size, jab, and aggressiveness squelches his opponents effectiveness, and therefore, his dominance over them is WHY he has so few competitive rounds.

If he were in with, as good, or a better fighter, you'd see him in some competitive rounds, but is it his fault that he's so much better than everyone he fights, and prevents them from being competitive?

    Is that his fault?

This thread topic is actually a bit backwards.

It should read, when was the last time someone emerged that was good enough to be competitive against Vitali?

The answer would be noone, since Lewis retired. Vitali has dominated everyone since, hence, he is too much better than all of them, for any of them to be competitive against him.

When was Wladimir's last competitive Round? and he's been fighting (for the most part) all top 10 fighters

both vitali and Wlad are miles ahead of the rest of the field, guys like (Areola,chambers,povetkin,Haye..) all need to work on alot if they want to join the elite field...

Who here is assigning blame or attempting to deride Vitali?

The thread's topic is meant to address the issue of Vitali's extended inactivity and how he can continue to be regarded as such a prohibitive favourite inspite of this inactivity.

Your suggested thread title is one I would not adopt in one million years because

    a) it will attract nuthuggers and so be ignored by most even handed posters

    b) it doesn't address the goals of the thread starter. who is me.

As I have mentioned before, This fight will not be about Haye's offense, it will be about his defence. how will he cope with a guy who wants you to lunge in, to throw hayemakers to be off balance for only a split second. VK will not fold over a punch, he doesnt retreat, he keeps looking for opportunities. Haye has no idea what the fight will be about.

If I was Haye's trainer, i'd say, take your time, take it to the late rounds and try to outlast VK. Going for the knockout will get himself in all kinds of trouble

i think Haye has to test Vitali's stamina to have succes in his fight. I see stamina as Vitali's biggest flaw.

When have you seen this "flaw". Breathing heavy and having an open mouth don´t apply... actual bad performance in the later rounds.

well tbh i think Vitali paces himself very well and has a good enough defense to take some time off and recover.

waht i've seen in a few fights is Vitali slowing down and looking like his arms are heavy after high paced action, which imo is an indication of bad stamina

What do you tihnk is Vitali's biggest flaw?

I don't think his stamina is bad at all.

A guy his size throwing 73 punches a round for 8 rounds after a 4 year layoff. I've heard a few people say he's got bad stamina, and I don't see where they get it from.
