I've seen some threads and posts recently about tyson and i feel that some people dont understand how important tyson's legacy is to the sport of boxing. Tyson for a period of time (and still is in some circles) as a god in human form, an untouchable force. In his early stages his work ethic & honor was there but as he aged he let too many outside forces influence him and he just broke down... he had to skill set to be one of the best of all time but thats besides the point..... the point of this thread is to establish the fact that tyson is one of the sports most important figures ever and is only second to ali... yes there were fighters who beat him or who have had better resumes but they didnt bring the mystique & story to the ring and to the people like tyson did...

holyfield will only be a chapter in tysons book
lennos will only be a chapter in tysons book....

those two will only truly be remembered for being the two guys who beat tyson...

all in all tyson is a great and I miss tyson...

i hope his book does well and he finds success & peace of mind in the future...

    ali>tyson> ____________

Your post is right if we're discussing overall boxing persona. If we're discussing actual boxing resume, credentials and such and such, your post is off.

    Depends on the category really.

    im talking about overall persona

we can definitely name boxers with a better resume
    better credentials
better skill set (all though prime tyson was tough sob)

but when it comes to the history of boxing tyson will go down as one of the most memorable figures of all time...and i think he had the gifts to be one of the best athletes of our time..im talking about up there with the jordans, tiger woods, wayne gretzskies, etc etc... he just let the outside world influence him way to much

    Tyson is a ATG,just not high ranking(not top 10).
I don't think Tyson is second to Ali as a sport figure,I don't know even if Ali is the number 1.Have you ever heard of Jack Johnson?Do you know what that man did for his time?Tyson was far more known for his outside the ring escapades than what went out inside.
Holyfield and Lewis are both higher than him on any HW ATG rankings.
That being said Iron Mike was awesome.

I would say it was a combination of both. The mystique of being trained in the Catskills, in seclusion, coming from a dead-end life to rising to be such a bright star. Kid Dynamite lit up the Heavyweight division with spectacular early knockouts, unifying, and wrecking Michael Spinks to finally establish himself as "The Man". So, he definitely put the work in and had "the goods" in the ring to justify the brightness of his star at the time.

Then later his out-of-the-ring exploits just added an exponential element of growth to his stature.

    A big mix.

If your talking about fame and being an Icon then I agree he is 2nd to Ali. However to any legit boxing fan or historian Tyson does not over shadow men like Lennox Lewis, Joe Louis, Jack Johnson, George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes or even Joe Frazier.

In terms of head to head I think Lewis and Liston both KO a prime Tyson. Ali and a prime Holmes have a good chance of out scoring Tyson to a UD win. Foreman and Louis stand a good chance of beating Mike as well.

Absurd. Lewis outdid everything Tyson did, so did Holyfield. Tyson was a me tap midget who did not have the desire to fulfil his physical talents,

Anyone who thinks Lennox Lewis or Evander Holyfield is more of a boxing icon than Mike Tyson is missing a link.

You got bitches who never watched boxing a day in their life talkin bout Mike Tyson. He was THE most recognized sports figure in the world for years. People to this day still talk about watching Mike Tyson fights and missing the KO cause they went and grabbed a beer.

And his out-of-the-ring antics added to his overall personna.

So I have to agree with Walk With Me on this one. It ain't even close.

I think we're pretty much all in agreement.

    Better fighters- Lewis, Holy

    Better persona/aura/legend- Tyson

Not that it's THAT far apart either...just how I see things.

Yeah but it won't be for boxing. The only thing boxing related that Tysons career will be spoken about is "him losing to a nobody named Douglas" and "biting Holyfields ear".

And how can Tyson be second when Jack Johnson and Joe Lious existed.
