"Thanks a lot Rocky, if only you weighed over 200lbs when you beat me I wouldn't be forever known as an aging former Middle Weight. I'd be just like Spinks, nobody would blame me for losing to such a monster, but no, you just had to come in at 188 didn't you?." This content is protected
I stand corrected. That nose isn't no much swollen as torn asunder... This content is protected I love how I supposedly hate the Rock now. I'll go home and throw away my career set.
"What's the difference, we are all damned. My heavyweight title regin and hall of fame wins are worthless, I'm nothing but an old middleweight who got knocked out by a midget." This content is protected
"Don't lie! My little boney arms disgust you. I have tainted the heavyweight division with my success, I'm not what an all time great is suppose to look like, burn your career set, remove me from existance!" This content is protected
Yes, it was the swelling on the nose that hindered him. Good thing Rocky never swelled around the eyes though. He would lose every single fantasy matchup. Nice talk, continue with the originality. :good P.S. The fact that Marciano is an aberration is a credit to him, not a discredit.
To answer the question seriously... Yes, I'm tempted to believe that Marciano was an aberration. I agree that fighters today have a significant advantage over heavies from Marciano's era because of their greater weight, but it's not as big an advantage as many believe. Lots of them carry extra fat as well, and your average LHW/Cruiser moving up is able to put on more weight than is absolutely necessary. It probably helps, but I suspect that diminishing returns come into it: after 200 lbs., it matters less, but since every fighter in their right mind want to squeeze the last ounce of advantage from their training, they'll come closer to the higher end than the low end. This makes it look like everybody has to be massive to win, when it actually wouldn't decrease their performance that much if they were 10 or 20 pounds lower. A little, but not much. Take Ali - Cooper II, for instance. Ali came in around 200 pounds for that one. Most people on this forum would pick Ali over a 235/40 pound Lewis, and I doubt that anyone would change that pick if it was the 201 1/2 lb. version from Cooper II rather than the 212 lb. version from Williams later that year.

This is the belief I was trying to reveal in all this digging. It is the consensus here, at least among the most vocal, that Marciano was a once in a century athletic freak of nature, that not even in the great nadirs of the division, could someone with his measureables sneak into contention for one of the many, diversified belts. I am glad we have that out of the way. Now, I will laugh myself silly.
