Here's what happened when Pinklon Thomas - an excellent jabber - threw a couple soft jabs at Tyson - like Savold threw at Marciano. Except Tyson finished Thomas (who was the number-one contender at the time, and much bigger, stronger, heavier and in far better shape than Savold). I shudder to think what Mike Tyson would've done to Savold had he thrown that cr@p at Tyson. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvQ89GqYz-U
Marciano landed most of those punches, which were devastating, as they shook Savolds head. Savold throws three jabs right away. I guess you guys don't see the footage as clearly as I thought!
Marciano and Tyson surprisingly had very similar punching styles. Tyson just looked to be in more of a rush than Rocky!
They weren't devastating enough or clean enough to actually knock him out, like Joe Louis had done in Savold's second-to-last fight. http://static.boxrec.com/thumb/6/66/Louis-Savold_2716545.jpg/450px-Louis-Savold_2716545.jpg But thanks for the info on streamable. I appreciate it.:good Good night.
I'm impressed by the way Rocky swayed back from the wide left hood and landed his own right to the body. I saw LaMotta do the same thing to Bob Murphy. I know Charley Goldman taught Rocky 99% of what he did but that head movement has to be natural to begin with.
"Looked to be in a rush?" Let me translate that for non Classicists... Mike was much more talented, much faster and had better balance.
Nice vid but those were hardly Holmes or Ali quality jabs. I get your point but a world-class jabber would definitely find success versus Rocky.
Thomas had a great chin. Not a great defensive fighter. His main defense was ramming his jab in someone's face, and when that was working he avoided taking too much punishment. He was already past his best against Tyson, but completely washed-up in his fights with Holyfield, Bowe and Morrison. And he still soaked up their best shots. By the time his jab was completely gone he was just a punching bag. Credit to Thomas's pure granite chin, but even more credit to Tyson for actually getting the man to fall down ! A great finish, perhaps Tyson's best.
I still remember the article KO magazine had on the fight. I probably still have the mag somewhere, though the cover is missing. It was a great piece, where Tyson was likened to Liston and Dempsey. I believe the headline was: "Greatness beckons, when will Mike Tyson answer the call.?" But not to derail a thread about Rocky.
