When's the last time you were in a boxing gym (if ever)?

And what was your experience like? Did you work out with a trainer? Spar? Train someone? How many folks have never actually been in a boxing gym?

I am asking these questions here because lots of posters in the classic forum constantly make huge generalizations about the poor quality of training in today's gyms, the things that today's fighters learn and don't learn compared to their predecessors, and how much things have declined over time. So I'm curious.

I'm there 4 days a week. I train fighters now and I find it ridiculous that people on this board praise some guy with beginner level skills that they've read about, while denigrating fighters of today who are much better. It's strange that people will watch 15 rounds of some old timer to see one good offensive or defensive move while they could watch Holyfield for one round in any fight and see the same thing done with better body mechanics. (Holyfield is just an example, there are plenty of others)

I'd much rather watch my guys spar than watch any old time video I've seen. From what I've seen of them on video, if you could bring Greb and Tunney back to life and they were fighting next door, I wouldn't walk next door to watch. I don't care to watch two non jabbing, stiff legged boxers stand in front of each other and take turns lunging at each other. I'm afraid that if I watch that **** enough it will start to look like boxing.

Idk a couple of weeks, been summer holidays so I've travelled and been out of the gym.

I sparred a few guys, after a good couple weeks off I managed to go 3 rounds so I was happy with that. I even dropped one of the new kids with a counter.

I'm actually in the parking lot of my gym right now waiting on my sparring partner to get here. I'm 44 and still box at least 3 days a week. I competed as an amauter into my early 20's until my wife and I started a family. I box for fun and fitness now and work with younger fighters every once in awhile although most of them are more into mma.

1997. PAL. Trained, sparred about 4 times. Did ok when I was a little scared. I sparred with a former pro. He wasn't trying to take my head of but he was stinging me if I made a mistake. He gave me praise for stinging him with my left. I was a lefty. Think I might have surprised him.
Got overconfident after that. Boxed a tall, skinny dude who looked like a nerd and thought I might knock this guy out easy. I had no intensity before the bell rang my trainer started yelling at me. I didn't know why, he must have sensed it, or saw it.
So I went out at the opening bell and I threw everything at this kid. I was throwing both hands at him and hitting him some good shots. I saw a pained expression on his face. Then a ****ed-up thing happened, my arms got real tired and heavy about 30 seconds into it and this mother****ing dude started boxing my ears off, hit me one combination knocked my headgear over my eyes, hit me again knocked it clear. I should have thanked him. I remember landing one last little jab on him and he peppered me again I actually think my trainers stop the round early cuz he was pepper the **** out of me. That's why I learned you just don't play boxing. You got to be all the way in or all the way out. Never underestimate an opponent. I kept training, I worked 8 hours a day, eventually I just didn't feel like getting hit in the face after work. I guess I had other options which I am thankful.

One other about my experience. I am no expert but when you get in that ring one thing you realize is that sucker is small. It ain't like it looks on TV it looks kind of big on TV. Float around and get away from people in that ring pretty small.

Been a couple of months. Had to get knee surgery for an imbalance in the quad i had. It's all fixed up now and I'm ready to start my murder spree again on those poor heavyweights at my gym

Also I need to be in top physical form for my grudge match with Crowcroft

To break it down, most of my training is sparring, heavybag work, and this bag we have to practice slipping punches. I also do alot of footwork and shadowboxing drills. I have a trainer but the place I go to isn't mainly a boxing place and I'd like to switch to Pernell Whitaker's gym in Virginia, it's a little less than an hour away. I get carried away in sparring alot so not many want to spar with me, but I still try to spar every day.

Trained for 2 years with Greg Wright, former Kronk gym affiliate and a former NABF light heavyweight champion. Did lots of sparring, drills, mitt work, etc. I signed for an amateur fight but the guy backed out so I focused on karate, jiu jitsu, basketball, and school. I continued to train for a bit and Greg wanted to get me fights but he fell out with the gym owner (who had the connections and equipment) so i started college (2007-2009ish).

In 2014 i taught a boys self defense classes at a community Center. It wasnt just boxing it incorporated a lot of wrestling and karate too. Then I got divorced and lost my main job lol so i moved and started over.

In 2018 i trained with buster Douglas for about 5 months at the thompson recreation center.

Currently I practice on the heavy bag and skip rope at my schools gym. Wish i could practice again but I work full time and take classes.

When i was younger befor I started taking my son I trained at a PAL gym. Harold Johnons nephew Emmit worked with me for a bit and my friend who was about 8 yrs older was a friend and sometimes sparring partner for Jimmy Young. We also worked together and sparred on and off. He was very very good. Then after i got married i went to Fraziers for a while to train. Really loved all of it.
Its not easy stepping into a ring gloved up. I got into it a couple of yrs ago with a poster for calling a fighter he wasnt happy with a bum.
Aint no bums climbing into a ring on a regular basis. That sheet is real and you can get hurt bad especially when your in there with a guy better than you. Hopefully hes professional enough not to hurt you but to work with you. I hate when people call fighters bums. They have no damn clue
