OP doesn't watch enough boxing. Which is fine, but this thread is ignorant. If anything, the Eastern Europeans are more rugged than the days of more slick guys like Whitaker, Nunn, Jones, Byrd, et al. Boxing isn't doing well in the United States, but it's thriving elsewhere.
Absolutely accurate. I don’t watch much boxing. I’ve never gotten used to not having free boxing on major networks every week. There’s boxing out there but you have to make an effort to find it. I pointed out that my opinion is based on a small sample size. When I do get to watch some boxing, I just don’t enjoy it much. There are a few guys I’ve watched who have some legit skill though. I’m in no way knocking all modern boxing. I’m also not knocking slick guys who rely on defense and boxing from the outside. I always love guys like that but just think you need contrasting styles to get great fights. If both guys are staying on the outside, it gets kind of boring.
Sadly boxing isnt like it used to be. Today unless you have the $$$$$$$$ & the influence of the Commissions behind you boxing talent alone wont get you to the top. Its not What you know & your talent gets you the "wins" its WHO you know. The greatest sport in the World is today regarded on a par with the WWE its entertainment NOT aq legitimate sporting contest any more
The philosophies have changed in many gyms. Mayweather had a lot to do with it. He proved you could win by doing less fighting. We went from a boxing philosophy of "hit and not get hit" to "not get hit and hit"... there is a difference. Most proactively aggressive styles are being taught by trainers with strong links to old school trainers. Freddy and Robert come to mind. I have no real evidence, but it appears to me that trainers today are teaching individual moves and punches for a situation, instead of as best choices for a system. Loma Sr seems to be adding some worthwhile contributions to the development of training and technique. But other than that, schools are getting less complicated.
1000% fact.. Its more and more a business these days compared to times gone by, money way way more than legacy
