If you know a former Boxer's whereabouts & how they are doing now. Or If you would like to put in a request if anyone knows about any former fighters. Please post. Always interesting to know how some of the former greats, or not so former greats are doing in life after boxing.
Oh, Ok Thanks! I seem to remember Ali fighting someone who had a huge Canadian flag in thier corner... Hard to remember exactly.
I can tell you that Johnny famechon is living in the sth east subs of Melbourne. He is in good spirits, even though he suffered horrific injuries after being hit by a car. Learned to walk again, and talks with a slur... some brain damage occured.. He battled through it, and married the sweetest lady on the planet (seriously, an absolute angel.. heart of gold), and remains a very popular man at boxing shows and sportsmans nights doing speeeches. He has certainly not lost his humour. Barry Michael lives down the street from myself, in Melbournes west. He still commontates on boxing nights, and promotes also. He faculties are very much intact, considering the hardened competition he faced. Jeff fenech is living in Sydney, training fighters, and a range of other things... including shopplifting. He is simply a habitual cliptomaniac... cant help himself. Very fit and healthy, yet Id like to see him in the current position of Johnny Famechon. Roles reversed. Jeff Harding lives in Sydney also... A sad case, very sad. From current reports, he is destitute, a solid drinker and things dont seem to be on the improve. Such a pity, the guy was Australias first L/HW champ... 20 years later, he is a drunken mess. Lionel Rose is back home in Druin.. 1 1/2 hours east of Melbourne. He is also a keen drinker, yet.. I believe he is not doing too badly. Living with his childhood sweetheart and quite happy. Another man who had an interesting life.. he is our most colorful fighter, without a doubt. Kostya Tszyu... not too sure... He is in Sydney, and involved with his own gym... yet, I havent heard too much lately.
I heard a few years ago the Richard Dunn lost one of his legs??? Due to what..Im not sure?? The memory of the report is clear, yet I dont recall the situation involved... sorry.
I'd love to meet Lionel, might have to head down that way and maybe have a beer with him some day. He's one of my favourite Aussie boxers even though I wasnt alive when he was fighting.
I don't know about losing a leg but I think he had a bad fall working on an oil rig injuring his legs.
Mate, Lionel follows his thoughts at any given time.... Ive had him scheduled for numerous sportsmans nights...... always at the last minute He'd contact me and suggest he is 150kms away.. generally on the booze.. or just doing as he pleases... lol. Lionel is a legend, and a true gentleman..... Get yaself down to Druin mate.... chances are, he will be in Bendigo at that time..lol. Its worth the effort to meet him... with the chance of buying him a beer and having a convo, just dont crowd him... He's a very obligueing guy, and will happily sign a pic for you. No fanfare, just treat him like the normal fellow in the pub, or neighborhood.. A very humble bloke he is, considering the amazing guy he is.
Merqui Sosa , the super middleweight and light heavyweight from the Dominican republic who faced a number of great champions in the 90's is now a trainer in Las Vegas and helps me with Friday Ahunanya, he is a great guy.. so is former amateur standout Kelcie Banks..
