..............To follow up on what Minatauro was saying, here's a youtube clip from Real Sports, highlighting the lives of Bobby Chacon and Danny Lopez, who met in an epic battle in 1974. Heartwarming to hear one story, heartbreaking for the next. That's boxing, I guess...... [YT]A4afYmsjPJA[/YT]
I remember seeing Fammo in late '85 at the afterparty (wake as it turned out) after Lester lost to John Sichula at Festival Hall, and thinking how fit and sharp he was for an ex fighter. Little did we think at the time that such a great bloke (and champ) would be bowled over by a car not too many years later.
gary mason has been off the charts a bit. form working/owning a jewlers shop to being on sky and being in a rugby team he semed to have dissappeared. julius francis has gone to the mma route, after doing kung-fu,taekwondo, kickboxing thnen turning pro as a domestic heavy he has turned back to momma and gone into a british mma promotional called cage rage/ doing just as well as he was in his later years as a boxer. also a trainer at peacocks gym. kirkland laing was a perfect case of talented boxer getting too much money too early started getting involved with weed and later crack. i heard he used had smoked a few joints before some of his british domestic fights...he wasnt a gym rat in the loosest sense. he was going to be in the house due to being found in a drug den bunging on a pipe of it. he seems alright now from what i heard. but i heard he has fallen out of his council flat apartment....anyone know more about this?
Mate, even at the time he referreed Michael and Ropis ( 84 I believe??), he still manouvered himself around the ring at such a pace that he was never in position to interfere with the fighters actions. Im aware that just prior to the accident, he continued to run up to 70kms/week. Such a tragic turn of events. As mentioned, Glynnis is a godsend.. Without her, the situation would have esculated 10 fold.
Still alive and well getting his ref licence turned down in Australia , he wanted to ref a fight between two midget boxers one named (Hammer Head ) but it could have been one of my more weird dreams that involve boxing :huh
about richard dunne my trainer was speaking to him offshore on the oil rigs and he was telling how ali would say 'come on richard your dropping your right hand' then hit him with a jab then say come on keep it up then the start of the sixth he said 'sorry richard mate im going to have to stop you here' the rest is history as they say
Terry Spinks lives with his sister and brother in law in Chadwell Heath Essex last I heard, is in fairly good health
Ex British & European WelterWeight Champion Pat Barrett still lives in the Manchester area after getting out of prison and still gets up to very very dodgy dealings with the notorius Cheetham Hill Gang .
