I'd hardly call someone who went 26 rounds a "front-runner".

Why not? Would that make him any less of a front-runner than a modern fighter who tires at the half-way point of a fight and flops rather than continue and take his beating?

Because in post #316 you stated that the Mann Act was designed to
"prevent black men and white women from forming sexual relationships."

It had nothing to do with that. If they had wanted a Federal
anti-miscegenation law, they could have passed one. The Mann Act
    was aimed at prostitution.

    This is true,

The man act of 1910,was passed to eliminate the illegal trading and selling of women into prostitiution.

I felt the need to bring this topic up again. I've recently been reading more Dempsey articles, done increased research on his career and have seen more of his fights closely.

I can't believe that I once had him quite that high, I think he had been in the bottom half of my top 10 for years prior to that too. Ever since tho he's been passed by Liston, Tyson, Holyfield and Johnson and now resides around 12th on my current list, overall. Over time and as I've gained ever more knowledge about the sport and untook took research etc I've begun to see past the deceptive "myth" surrounding his career, unfortunately the "substance" behind that is not quite as impressive as you'd like to believe. I think it's akin to spoonfed fantasy that he's regarded amongst the best three of all-time by some. Offensively he's one of the best ever but head-to-head against a fair share of greats post Ali he struggles, I think. The likes of Louis and Johnson take him as well.

It's curious to see how some lists and opinions etc can change with time. :think Lewis has moved from #5 to #4 in that time and Liston moved up three or four places too.

What are your personal thoughts about Dempseys career overall, in hindsight?

I've been worrying i've got Hollyfield to high (currently 8) and Holmes (11) and Wills (14) to low.

    On and on it goes.

Holyfield is about right give or take a place or two, it's the fact you only have Larry at #11 which baffles me somewhat* (most have him at least in their 10). Anywhere from 15-20 is OK for Wills I reckon, though Peter Jackson shouldn't be too far behind in any case. :bbb

*Don't worry some people will probably say the same about my omition of Foreman. We all rate criteria and footage differently I suppose. :yep

#3 for Dempsey is ludricous IMO. Who exactly do you envisage him beating (give a stylistic anaylsis if possible)?

Incidently what does you Top 10 all-time list look like?

Fair do's, obviously people will have their own subjective opinion. I just find it very difficult to justify how him being that high all factors considered. His title reign doesn't impress me that much and I'd favour a fair number against hm head to head.

Top 10 I could maybe understand, but 3rd is way stretching it IMO.

New list is something like this:

    1 - Ali
    2 - Louis
    3 - Liston
    4 - Lewis
    5 - Frazier
    6 - Johnson
    7 - Jeffries
    8 - Tyson
    9 - Marciano
    10-Holmes
    11-Hollyfield
    12-Dempsey
    13-Foreman
    14-Wills
    15-Jackson

I'm leaving it at 15 for the moment. May try to flesh it out to 30.

Wow, you love getting people mad on this forum, don't you? If this is between you and Hank then keep me out of it if you don't want more trouble for yourself.

Just my opinion, but i think dempsey has a good chance of besting any other infighters (Tyson, Frazier, Marciano). He'd eat Foreman for breakfast. He'll have troubles with the boxer-puncher types (Louis, Tunney of course, probably Ali too although i don't think ali could hurt him). This is based merely on a whim, but for some reason I think he'd do well against Lewis and Holmes too. I don't know how he'd fare against Johnson, don't know much about him. Ezzard Charles (so underrated) might be a toss up too. Again, this is all opinion and just my personal thoughts. At the very least, you can always say jack has a puncher's chance.

My work in progress ATG list-

#1 Joe Louis (if only for being an excellent human being)
    #2 Ali (if he's not in someone's top 5 they're probably delusional)
    #3 Dempsey (reasons stated above)
#4 Ezzard Charles (he was really good IMO)
    #5 Gene Tunney (severely underrated)
#6 Joe Frazier (just a bad ass)
#7 Rocky Marciano (really overrated IMO)
#8 Larry Holmes (I don't like larry, but i feel i rate him high)
#9 George Foreman (because of the comeback, respect is given)
    #10 Jack Johnson (good legacy)

I rank him as the most devastating overall offensive machine of alltime till a young Tyson eventually supplanted him. Speed, ferociousness, one punch power, great chin, it was all there.
