I think he's,,very good! You can easily match him with any 135 pounder that ever lived. No doubt top 5 in any ratings of that division.
#2 all time at LW based solely on fights contested in that divison (I.e. I have Duran higher p4p based on their entire careers at all weights but lower bases solely on LW fights) and #13 all time P4P.
Hi Guys. At LW top 3 ( Leonard/Duran as you like ) Not got time or energy for a P4P, but would say somewhere between 10 and 15 maybe ? stay safe posters.
With guys like him, Benny Leonard, Gene Tunney, Battling Nelson, John L Sullivan, George Gardner, Ted Kid Lewis, Philadelphia Jack O Brien, Young Stribling, Young Corbett, Daniel Mendoza , Sam Langford, Sixto Excobar and the like its really hard, There is no film or too little of it to judge, and we only have newspaper accounts, which were biased and sometimes even racial;y motivated. So we really dont know. But I read a book on him and really respect his ability, he seemed to be something special and in fact was still fighting when severelly ill. Amazing!
highly. i'm not the guy to care if he's number 4 or 10 all time. gans was tough, smart, had good technique and was physically top tier. what else could you want?
You're not going to like my ranking of Williams, McVey. Based solely on contests fought at LW (small allowance made for non title contests staged just over the limit), I have it: Leonard Gans Duran McFarland Whittaker Ortiz Williams Ambers Welsh Canzernori Williams was a brilliant LW with a fantastic win resume, but with the defeats, he suffered in and around his prime years, he wasn't as dominant as the 6 I have above him, imo.
