He ate an astounding amount of leather and scarcely flinched when getting his head snapped back. Only dropped once by a juiced Mosley. I think he has a very strong case for a top 10 chin of all time.
Well, Mosley stopped him knocking him out (criminally underrated win due to revisionism, Mosley was the underdog), with Cotto and Pacquiao, those two guys never had one punch power so... Pacquiao didn´t stop De La Hoya with one punch either (with Hatton yeah but still). Top 10 seem too much for him... I´m not a believer in chins though, hit a guy clean and flush, he is going down, every brain shooks...
Margarito wasn't out cold when the ref stopped it against Mosley though and that was after taking an incredible beating against a very big puncher. Cotto scored a number of one-punch KOs with his left hook iirc and hit Margarito flush again and again in the first fight before Margarito walked through it and wore him down. Pac lost his power as he moved up but did scored a couple one-punch KOs over Sasakul, Hatton, and Jorge Julio, though Pac was always more of a volume guy rather than putting a lot into single shots. Interviews of all his opponents attest to his power. Margarito was hit clean all the time in every fight and every sparring session he ever had but still went on to win. He ate Cotto's punches, ate loads of Mosley's before he got stopped, ate Cintron's, ate Paul Williams', ate Sergio Martinez's; he took a lot of clean shots from a lot of punchers.
The ref stopped when he was falling though, he was about to get koed cold, but I get your point, yeah he took many big punches in that fight...he should be out earlier.
Mosley had to punch him 2,000 times full power with Margarito having no defense at all to get the KO. And he was falling down, dazed vs. Mosley, not stopped standing. Those shots would have stopped any welterweight. If he were to fight on, he would have been starched in the coming seconds. I think Margarito is among the toughest in the weightclass ever. Potentially the best chin at the weight ever. But he loses all his credit with the plaster incident. He sure took a million power shots off Paul Williams and Pacquiao as well.
Hi Terror. Fully agree re: his chin, out of interest 1 to 4 where do you rank, Ross/Palomino/Basilio/Margarito in the chin department . stay safe buddy, always drop into your posts.
The Mosley fight is a plus for Margarito’s chin rather than a negative. Margarito got the **** kicked out of him before finally going down in the 8th. Mosley was hitting him repeatedly with flush shots, and loading up on so many of those right hands. In the previous fight, Cotto landed a lot of hard shots, but was also on the back foot a lot more. Mosley was getting more leverage into those shots, and also weakened Margarito with hard body shots. If his chin wasn’t at least about a 9/10, he would have been out of there much sooner. He was never a defensive whiz, but he was blocking punches with his face all night.
@Dorrian_Grey I think Jose Luis Lopez has an argument to having one of the best Welterweight chins of all time and hes never talked about. Took over 300+ punches from a big punching Welterweight like Quartey without ever been visibly hurt. And I don't believe Lopez was ever down in his professional career atleast to my knowledge. As for Margarito I'd rate his chin up there but top 10 of all time ? Oliver McCall Marvin Hagler Jake LaMotta James Toney Carmen Basilio Kid Gavilan Harry Greb Salvador Sanchez George Chuvalo Chris Eubank Mike McCallum Sandy Saddler Billy Graham Oleksandyr Usyk Wayne McCullough Juan Laporte Julio Cesar Chavez Charley Burley Gennady Golovkin Carlos Monzon Canelo Alvarez William Jones Panama Al Brown Muhammad Ali Pancho Villa Sugar Ray Robinson Etc. Theres so many iron chinned fighters of the past and some of these fighters on the list were only knocked down once or twice in over 100+ fightes. So putting Margarito in the top 10 chins of all time is probably a no from me.
The Pac and Mosley fight speaks high, never rated welterweight chins but hell, he might be among the toughests. Also op do you think his chin is more sustainable than Clotteley?
Honestly Mike, I'm not historically versed enough to tell you certainly. So here's my relatively unedcuated analysis. I'll say Basilio his probably my #1 there from his wars with Fullmer and Robinson alone. He ate some disgusting shots in those fights. For some reason I always associate him with the middleweight division even though he fought a lot more at welter. To take shots off a blown up, dirty fighter in Fullmer and the most lethal power puncher of all time in Robinson speaks volumes and he will have to be my #1. Palomino was a twitchier, better boxer than Margarito who was in there with some greats but had more wrinkles to his game. He had excellent combinations, hand speed, and he could move his head a bit. Plus he was crafty with how he set his shots up unlike Marg who just waded into the fire and was comfortable in a jab battle. So I can't say, because Palomino was much more well rounded and I think found his chin getting crushed full bore less often. I think Margarito could eat shots from Duran for a long time. Margarito took so many punches off of Cotto, Cintron, Williams, Pacquiao, Mosley and was only stopped from non-injuries to Mosley. I like Ross but I'm not incredibly familiar and have only watched his fights vs Armstrong and McLarnin. Armstrong was a great puncher but also had an incredibly high pace. Ross was facing guys who were a lot smaller than the welterweights Margarito fought. For that I guess I will knock his chin rating but his record speaks for itself having never been stopped in 80+ contests. I'll say Basilio, Margarito, Palomino, Ross. Just because I have seen Basilio and Margarito eat the most flush shots on the chin. And I could go either way with 1 and 2 and same with 3 and 4. I have just seen much more Palomino than Ross. For me, "iron chin" means you have a bad defense and can take full power shots right on the button and not go down, for that, Margarito has few rivals in welterweight.
Top 10 all time? Nah. Off the rop of my head, Margarito's below Billy Graham, Kid Gavilan, Jose Luis Lopez, Emile Griffith, Barney Ross, Carmen Basilio, Lou Brouillaird, and Jack Britton at welterweight. The list gets longer if you include fighters from other divisions.
Hi Buddy. Well I must say for someone who is " relatively uneducated " that was a mighty in depth and well thought out riposte, also thanks for prompt reply, not an easy task I set you, I had pondered beforehand how my 1 to 4 would go, and it wasn't as easy as I thought, for what it's worth, I have my 4 in the same order, not sure if you are aware, but Basilio is one of my favs ( along with Napoles ) so I might be a tad biased, but yea taking all the heavy shots he did, from full blown MWs is a bit special, also down at his natural weight he withstood De Marcos left hook over 24 rounds or so, that in itself is eyebrow raising , buy all 4 had remarkable chins, and took heavy bombardment throughout their careers, a testament to how good their mandibles were . Enjoyed our little chat, let's do again on another topic, it's a pleasure to cross talk with pleasant and polite members, such as yourself. stay safe buddy.
That's fair. There are a lot of fighters with granite mandibles and ranking chins is a more subjective metric than, say, resume is. I can see Margarito slotting into that list though and I think he could be argued above Ali, Canelo, and McCallum but again, it's very subjective ranking intangibles.
