P4P Billy Conn at 170lbs or so rates with the top 15-20 alltime. But in a fantasy bout ,in his prime I place Conn just under Tunney and Ezzard Charles at LH. A tough, tough guy at his best. Beat everyone ,except the 28 pound heavier Joe Louis. Ko'd Bob Pastor, beat Melio Bettina, Gus Lesnevich, a young Lee Savold. One of my alltime favorites, and the second best fighter from Pittsburgh...

Thanks for your response Burt. An yeah Pittsburgh produced some really interesting characters. Conn, Zivic, Grebb, Burley.

Billy Conn was hot ****. The guy was pretty astounding at figuring a fighter out and has some very very underrated wins- like Young Corbett, Yarosz, Risko, Krieger etc.

For about a 5-6 year stretch he was top of the line.

Below Sanderline Williams , Steve Collins & Tony Thornton. Conn was very big compared to his opponents except from Louis but still failed at stopping them but did manage to get stopped himself and it is still leaving Louis out.
Lacking of longevity doesn't help either. And his level of competition , especially for a man of his size is just not impressing.
If there is a case for Conn then there are surely cases for Lewis and Wlad . I however , dismiss them as p4p near greats.

Not sure what you mean here. When Conn was a middleweight he fought middleweights. When he was a light-heavy he fought light-heavyweights and when fighting at heavyweight was always giving AWAY weight.

In terms of ability or achievements?

In terms of how good he was, at his best he is one of the best light heavyweights ever hands down. The type of which you're thinking 'so how do you beat him?'

Another interesting question, is what sort of resume he would have ended up with if the war had not taken place.

Might have been on a par with Ezzard Charles.
