In light of the recent Joe Gans thread and under rated/forgotten fighters thread I began thinking about Bobcat. he holds a split w/both Ike & Beau and IMHO holds the wins the superior victories in those rivalries by both fighters being closer to thier primes. Yet he never seems to get mentioned as often as often as those 2, and the few mentions he does recieve are few and far between...a shame that we have no footage...Do we (That would make my weekend!)?

Where do you rate Bobcat among Lightweights and does he enter into anyones top 100 P4P list for those who endeavor such undertakings? Who are the greatest LW's you would pick him to beat (If we can do that without footage?)?

Bob Montgomery was a helluva lightweight who I saw 3 times in MSG. Beating Beau Jack in 1944, being kod by Al Bummy Davis in one rd,and koing Allie Stolz...Montgomery came along the same time as his 3 great rivals Ike Williams, Beau Jack and Sammy Angott...A great body puncher was the bobcat...

Angott seemed to have his number....Did you ever get see them square off??? Why do you think Mongomery seemed to struggle with Angott and remained unable to figure him out?

Angott seems to be largely forgotten or underrated these days as well.

Ask Willie Pep about Sammy Angott...I never saw Angott but he was called "the clutch " as he was inside you . holding. punching. wrestling, and it was hard to get room to punch...Tough old bird, who made everyone look lousy..

He came along in maybe the most vicious era in Lightweight history. Had Duran and Chavez come along in that era they would of had a few Ls on their record.

Angott was a disruptive mauler. He was strong, durable and wore you down with his mix of punching, clinching and mauling. The closest anyone ever got to figuring him out would be Ray Robinson, who fought him several times but never stopped him, and Fritzie Zivic, who was just bigger and better at Angott's game than Angott was(indeed even added a few tricks Sammy wasn't prepared for). Angott admitted that Fritz was just too much for him.
