Bowe looked good in the second fight too, Holyfield just fought smarter Yes it does count against his consistency and everything, but i just don't think the third fight is a true indication of what Holyfield was really capable of
my point was there is no way anyone can say Holyfield was at his "PEAK" for the third fight. First and second fight, yes, but not third. No way
True that it's not an indication of what he was really capable off, but that doesn't mean we should forget it. It still counts against him. And i don't think Bowe looked that good in the second fight. He was 15 or so pounds overweight and looked a lot less sharp. I agree that Holyfield fought a better fight and perhaps he could've won the first fight as well if he had those 10 extra lbs and better gameplan, but he didn't so we have to judge him like that. Not peak, but certainly prime. A year later he'd have the two biggest wins of his entire career by beating up Mike Tyson! He was seen as washed up, but in hindsight we know it was just a case of him being inconsistent.
i never said the losses do not count. I am just saying that the last fight is not a true indication of what Holyfield was really capable of- and his medical problems and everything that had been going on wit him
Pure speculation tho. Maybe Bowe was simply at his absolute best and too good this night. Not like it's the first time Bowe beat him you know.
Probably not, he was gettin' on a bit. Doesn't mean he can't have turned back the clock that night tho. I'm sure you would agree Bowe is a peculiar one to judge. I know he struggled post Holyfield but that's cloudy too.
I would never disagree, but you have a top 10 Heavyweight in his peak years losing a series to someone substancially below him. Give me Lewis anyday thanks. Magoo made a very interesting post a handful of days ago. I tend to agree.
This statement needs some revising. Tyson nor Holyfield were their peak when Holyfield fought him. Bowe, Lewis and Moorer were prime, but Holy lost to all of them, and only really avenged against Moorer. Foreman and Holmes were on the comeback trail. Don't get me wrong, I love Holyfied and at one point I rated him as the best of the 90's to, but when we look at his accomplishments during the 90's he comes up a bit short when compared to Lewis.
Uh, but Lewis came back to flog both, which is more than Holyfield did. Bowe, simply put, PROVED himself to be the superior man. Did McCall or Rahman do this with Lewis? Not on your rhetorical life :good
You fail to weight that properly agianst - A man who defeated every man who ever faced him. A man who defeated 2 ATG top 10 HW's past best, but far from "shot". More contenders fought and defeated than anyon since Louis. (Thanks to Chis P.) More great punchers fought and defeated than anyone aside from Ali and Louis (Again, that's Chris P's work). One of the most complete punching arsenals in the history of the division, top 6 beyond a doubt. Finally, Lewis is more likely to lose to lesser fighters than anyone else in the top 10. This, of course, is a tangible. But not one so severe as to see him demoted from the top 10. I have him at 4 now.
I'm happy with the outcome of this poll, I always though people didn't give Lewis the credit he deserves, but gladly I was wrong.
