Where do you rate Michael Moorer as a heavyweight?

I think top 50 isn't out of the question. When he was on song he was great to watch but he was pretty inconsistent. Thoughts?

Moorer was pretty good, an educated, well conditioned southpaw boxer, with power even at HW after stepping up from 175. One of the better boxers of the 1990's in the higher divisions.

If we're doing specific numbers, we might be able to pick out a winning lottery ticket. I'll say 35.

To me MM was a pretty skillful guy that had pretty good pop and threw good combinations. He is often downgraded by folks because of his chin but the reality is getting knocked out by Foreman and Tua is not an uncommon thing. With that said he was hurt multiple times as a heavyweight but always showed a lot if heart coming back and climbing off the deck. If anything hurts him to me it's that he could be weirdly complacent at times even when things were going well for him. It was frustrating how he wouldn't let his hands go at times.

All that said he was a very good yet inconsistent heavyweight. At his best beats a lot of guys with his skill. At his worst gets caught with something stupid because he gets lazy or unfocused.

That was basically Evander Holyfield’s strategy going in to the 2nd fight ....”I’m going after this guy’s chin “...and it worked

One thing that is interesting about his career is that he really should have been a two time Lineal heavyweight champ. A lot of folks believe that Axel Schulz cleanly beat Foreman after Foreman beat MM. Foreman wanted no part of a rematch with the underated Shultz that just boxed his ears off. MM went on to beat Schulz for the vacated title in a close fight.

Moorer was pretty much done after the 2nd Holyfield fight. A combination of injuries and weight gain sapped his effectiveness. He went from a good combination punching heavyweight to a slow plodding banger.
