Was 'Roycott' based on logic though, look at the Ring top10 lists and see how many Roy fought:

If you look at the lists the only major ommision was Darius and we know that was a very hard fight to make politically. Aside from that Nunn/Rochaigani would be good opponents that didnt happen but I doubt either were seriously ducked because they werent any better than anyone Roy did fight. Other than that Jones cleared house at LHW and would beat the next Champion and the man who dethroned Darius

 

Roy cleaned house outside of DM...cant doubt that.

But it wasnt much of a house to clean...Regardless if the Ring saw fit to rank some of those guys in their ten.

 

That's a good list, and about where I would place Jones.

 

Maybe they would have been seen as better if Jones wasnt so dominant

 

What made them look so bad outside of Roy..was the guys they beat coming up and how average they looked beating them.
And how often they would fade into the sunset after they got their shot, losing to some fairly mediocre opposition.

The fact that Roy made them look so bad isnt why Im writing them off. He made everyone look bad and would make some great fighters look average in comparison. But when they didnt look so hot even against C class fighters then alarm bells started ringing.

Not all were bad...Some were pretty good but majority werent. Its not that hard to see, there is plenty of fights available of all the fighters Roy took on.
Ive seen a hell of a lot of one Glenn Kelly and let me tell you any era he is getting a shot in isnt particularly healthy.

 

Why do you keep using Kelly as an example. Jones KO'd him with his hands behind his back, he completely toyed with him. As far as his other comp, Fighters like Reggie Johnson gave James Toney argueably his toughest fight. Hall gave DM two very tough fights. Telesco, was solid. Del Valle was a titlist who fought for the title again after. Montell Griffen was competitive with the top guys and beat James Toney, (was trained by Eddie Futch), Eric Harding beat Antonio Tarver, Gonzalez beat DM, so realistically the guys that Jones was fighting at LH were all competitive with each other on the top level of the division. Jones domianted all of them for the most part. The only fighter that had him a little befuddled was Griffin and Jones destroyed him in the rematch.

 

Roycott was based on the fact the TV people gave him a whopping contract and he constantly and consistently missed the best fights (if it had been 1 or 2 then fair enough). Then when Rich Hall found a way of preventing Jones' lawyers from getting him off the hook with the tests, he predicted Jones would lose his next fight...and he got completely scrambled.

To be honest, this kind of debate isn't really about Roy it's about just how good the other guys in history were and how they actually proved it in the ring. In Roy's era clowning around and humiliating your opponent might have made him popular with the hard of thinking but in the past boxers actually preferred to beat the best out there, often multiple times, as the true test of what they brought to the ring.

As a boxing fan I'd rather give the guys who proved it the plaudits rather than someone who didn't think he had to bother.

 

While Jones not fighting DM, is certainly a valid criticism, a tad too much is made of it. In the first place DM had just as much to do with that fight not being made as Roy did. Secondly, there are a lot of great champions who have gone through lengthy title reigns and didn't necessarily face EVERY challenger in the universe. The fact that Jack Dempsey never fought Harry Wills doesn's stop people from calling him great. I also think that some try and stretch the fact that he avoided certain people, when in fact the time lines and results of certain fights didn't warrant a meating. When was he supposed to fight Michael Nunn? Some have even accused him for ducking guys who weren't even light heavyweight contenders or titlists, but rather middleweights and supper middleweights like Frank Liles.

 

I think this guys even more ******ed if thats possible. Theres no arguing with arrogant, misinformed people. They think they're right and thats it.

 

Look at Floyd Mayweather now or Mike Tyson in the mid to late 80's. It was somewhat the same. They didnt get hit, and made their fights look like quick jogs around the park. Thats when the insults start flying. They're ducking, they dont fight anyone, their comp sucks, etc. Fans want to see competitive fights, they want to see a great fighter tested, knocked down, bloodied etc, but they dont always have a super talent to dance with, so they go through an era where they fight just about everyone and still get criticised to high hell. Look at Lennox Lewis, hes applauded for avenging his defeats against fighters he should have never lost to in the first place, yet thats a point that is almost always brought up when evaluating Lewis.
Its more about them being that good, that dominant, and it takes someone who understands a fighters ability and their competitions ability to acknowledge it. Someone like Roy Jones cant be blamed for not having a Michael Spinks in his era, just like Mike Tyson cant help not having an Ali or Frazier in his.

 

Well Hill and McCallum despite being past prime were excellent wins and dominations to boot. Griffin was undefeated and beat the great James Toney twice. Tarver cleaned out much of the division to get his shot. McCallum/Reggie Johnson/Del Valle were titlists at the weight, Grant was a MW titlist. Harding had the win over Tarver, Gonzalez an unbeaten prospect.

Plus Tarver/Woods/Gonzalez all went to be champions after Jones beat them. Hall also went on to get a questionable cuts stoppage in Germany while winning the fight against Darius

Many contenders throughout history fade into the sunset after they lost their title shot, sometimes fighters lose their motivation after being dominated/beaten, plus its not easy to stay in your prime it takes hard work, which you lose the motivation for once you've been dominated. It doesnt mean they werent once good fighters

Bottom line Jones didnt take on a murderers row of opposition at 175lbs but he barely lost a round in his LHW reign. Some were pretty good and there would have been Hopkins/Eubanks/Darius fights if those fighters really wanted it to happen, they didnt and for good reason

 

What so no light heavyweight Jones beat is better than Marvin Johnson??? WTF that is a horrible horrible statement.

That just shows you that you guys really do hate Roy Jones, Marvin Johnson is nowhere near a great fighter.

Marvin Johnson has lost pretty much every big fight he's ever been in, except for Galindez


That also shows you that fighters these days won't get the credit they deserve for about another 10 years.


Actually Roy Jones had a fight set up with Rochigianni back in 98/99 but Rochiggianni backed out or something and Roy fought someone else instead.

**** tho, how in the hell did the Dariusz and Roy Jones fight never happen, someone was ducking someone and I don't know who. It just had to be.

By those lists that just shows you Roy wasn't the ducker like a lot of people think he was.

 

Hill maybe, McCallum not so much. Jones looked average at best against a 40 year old man. People tend to forget that the Hill fight wasn't even contested at 175 but it should be counted in Jones's win resume (otherwise his legacy at the weight would be terribly weak).

Tarver was a very good win for Jones but we can't forget that Tarver went 2 out of 3 against Jones, including a devastating 2nd round knockout.
