Yes it was at 175 it was for the interim title. Shutting out his opponent on all cards is looking average? He had a lot of respect for McCallum and didnt want to knock him out, but he completely outclassed him.

I meant the Virgil Hill fight. It was above 175 pounds.

Watch the McCallum fight yourself. It was a disappointing performance which wasn't scored a shutout by the unofficial WBC judges, only by Jones's hometown Florida judges. Jones won clearly but he didn't exactly put on a show.

The Hill fight wasnt at 175 because Hill was struggling with the 175lb limit, it was a couple of pounds over, Jones deserves full credit, more so than forcing Hill to come down to 175. Hill got an impressive win over Tiozzo after that.

McCallum is a crafty crafty fighter, Jones pretty much all the rounds though for me

Tarver did go 2-1 against Jones but all those fights were past Jones prime so at least he got the first. Most agree that Jones just wasnt Jones anymore by that stage and a fast 6'2 southpaw is a tough match up anyway

In his prime I wouldn't expect Jones to lose many rounds against Spinks opposition either and Qawi as good as he was is made to measure for Jones

Any truth in the theory that Jones, full of respect for McCallum, 'held back'?

No it wasn't fought at 175 because Jones had vacated his LHW title and planned a move into the heavyweight division, only to return to LHW and have his title given back (but not in time for the Virgil Hill fight).

Hill came in at 176, Jones came in at 177.

McCallum was crafty but I can only imagine the Roy Jones of now against a prime Mike McCallum. Basically the equivalent of that fight.

I also dint believe that the quick, iron-chinned two fisted assault is easy for ANYONE, even Roy. Btw, Roy got me into boxing as a litle boy and I have as much admiration for his skillset as anyone. But Qawi is not 'made to order' for Roy IMO. He'd be hard to keep range against Even for someone with Jones' speed, ring generalship and elusiveness.

He landed his best punches on McCallum's granite chin so not for me. He just couldn't knock him out, simple as that.

ya the Mccallum fight a dissapointing performance for Jones. Larry and George said that Jones is just carrying Mccallum to a decision. If he wanted to Roy could have ended the fight.

This is when Roy started the "I don't like to hurt people anymore, if I don't have to" saying because of what happened to Mcclellan. You could see that in the Pazienza and Brannon fights he didn't want to hurt them, but he did what he had to do and literally almost killed both of them. Same goes with Mccallum because Roy really respected him and Mccallum really respected Roy.

McCallum aged better for 1 thing, Jones doesnt fight too well old so McCallum probably wins, but its not a given. Prime for prime Jones wins a similarly wide UD, although yes it'd be closer. But whatever Kalambay can do Jones can do better

True. To be fair with his mix of awesome punch resistance and craftiness, they are few I'd pick to stop that old version of the Body Snatcher. Fair?

Hill came fresh of a beating from DM.

Yeah, right. Questionable cuts stoppage. Like Johnson was robbed against Ottke  I bet you van´t seen that fight either.

    That´s true.

Yeah, right it´s their fault. Fact is, Jones was the guy everybody wanted to fight due to the money it would bring. If Jones would have wanted any of those fights would have happened.

Roy still has quicker hands than McCallum did in his prime. McCallum at 40 was terribly, terribly slow and against a prime Roy Jones he didn't truly stand a chance. He was still competitive for a while and made Roy look more human than the likes of Pazienza and Glen Kelly. But as a win I wouldn't rate it that highly. McCallum was no more than a name at that point.

Agreed although I'm not sure if the old Body Snatcher would be standing in here against a Bob Foster.

Jones backed out a few days before the fight and still stayed WBC champ even so Rocchiginai was his mandatory- a joke in itself since Jones vacated the title before and Rocchigiani won it but when Jones moved back down to lhw he got his title back and Rocchigiani got degraded to interim champ. That´s why Rocchigiani sued the WBC and he won.

If Jones would have wanted the fight he would have gotten it.

    Roy was a cherrypicker. Fact.

All fighters are cherry pickers to some extent, but you cant tell me a fighter like Rocchigiani was a big deal, he wasnt that good. I always felt DM was overated too, and Gonzalez proved it.
