Where does 39yo Marquez' KO over prime Pacquiao rate historically?

nice comparison, and also it is comparable in that Tarver had the benefit of fighting Roy before this fight, so he knew his style a little.

You'll have to be specific about your definition of 'prime'.

Logic would have you believe that Pacquiao is no longer at his peak (when one registers their most savoured work during their physical prime) but then he didn't look half bad before the KO - probably the best he's looked in several fights which suggests that his previous 'duds' were little more than hiccups in the engine.

Somebody posted that it's around the same value as Holyfield's win over Tyson, well they don't come much more career defining than that one.

Even if Pac was a little past prime almost everyone agreed Pac looked the best he did in a long time.
I think that has to be taken into account as well.

I don't think Manny looked that great. He was taking chances and his timing was not good, which is why he was reaching in more than he ever had. He really wanted that knockout as much as JMM did.

it ranks the same as Juan Meza KO 1 Jaime Garza in the 80s or Edwin Rosario KO Livingstone Bramble or Lloyd Honeyghan KO Don Curry but below Richie Sandoval Jeff Chandler

And how often has this happened in boxing history? Pulled off by an old man?

Marquez's win is uniquely unprecedented and truly historic.

Its best parallels are in the world of fantasy: like McLarnin kayoing Ross, or Frazier kayoing Ali, or Pep kayoing Saddler, or Greb kayoing Tunney, or LaMotta kayoing Robinson, or Holyfield kayoing Lewis.

Like Unforgiven says, had Mayweather done this, he'd instantly be elevated to the best of the era.

Pacquiao has a special place in boxing history. He is quite possibly the most iconic boxer since Mike Tyson (TIME magazine's cover featured Tyson in 1988 and NO OTHER FIGHTER until Pacquiao in 2009). That is history.

And it is mere hollow snobbery to dismiss mainstream impact: only the best fighters--like the best singers--have global influence.

Any man who bests such a man is a truly great fighter.

That is Juan Manuel Márquez. ¡Mucho, Juan Manuel!

    Marquez was damn near 40.

If anything, he was further past it then Pac, the prime thing washes out.

Two aging greats in an epic clash, epic victory.

It's one of the defining win of this division's era thus far, imo, right up there with Pacquiao's run and Margarito-Cotto.

Taking credit from an old man for beating a fading superstar is fundamentally unfair. The slower, more beat up 40 year old was EASILY at the bigger disadvantage. Giving Marquez more cracks at Pacquiao only increased the likelihood of the opposite outcome of what occurred. NOBODY could say something as stupid as Manny going over the cliff in one night and be taken seriously. That possibly existed with Marquez.

    Respect.

Yes, he does, but he's a great fighter in his own right, and he appears to have a bit left.

A win over Bradley, another over Pacquiao, and another over at titlist at 140? None of it is out of the question, and it would put him right up there.
