Alright, it is more or less pointless to try and rate fighters that are still active. Never been much of a fan, but he seems to be for the most part a class act and is usually in good fights, so I may be persuaded one day. I respect him for what he's done as it is though.
Calzaghe is around 80-100 atm. He has a unique record which is a plus. However, he should have more big fights earlier on. Someone with his record should have had a good case for top 10-15. Very few fighters remain undefeated after being champions for more than a decade fighting mostly defenses for the majority of their carreers. Then why do we not consider him top 10-15? Because he only in the last couple of fights has met the kind of opponents he should have had 5-6 more of over his carreer.
If Kessler goes on to be a good champ and Lacy beat JT and Calzaghe beats Roy and Pavlik I could have him as high as top 30!
easily. look, i really dont care for all the calzaghe hate/nuthuggery here. makes no difference to me how his career closes down. but i think calzaghe has made enough of a mark to be a shoe in for the lower half. look at the list posted by thread stealer, and i'd say he's had a better career than the likes of galaxy or pancho villa. decent resume, good skilled fighter.
modern boxers always but always go up in hindsight and the longer they have retired the higher they go. calzaghe if he retires undefeated will be the same.
Lennox Lewis is the greatest British boxer ever. Point blank. Top 10 heavyweight. When Calzaghe beats roy jones, then fights Pavlik and if he wins that I dont see how anyone couldnt have him on an ATG list.
