Awful to watch, he can’t punch and how he was mandatory for the WBO is beyond me. Needs to get active but can’t ever see him beating the like of Dillion Whyte unless it from stinking joints out with that semi contact jab and clinch style.
That jab was only the second day worst thing I saw last night. When his backne started weeping blood I almost puked out my cornflakes!
He's a great mover for a big man, but power wise there's absolutely nothing there. The jab half of the time is just a flick, which regularly falls short, when it does land there's no power in it. He's pretty durable Parker did land a few good shots but Hughie took them well. I can't see him progressing far, as he'll always be just a survivor in there.
Hughie can move, he has a good engine, took the punches that he got hit with well but doesn't seem to have enough pop in his punches. A good strength coach can get him stronger without sacrificing his speed and movement. If he can build some strength and translate that into punching power he will be a very tasty boxer. This fight was too early a roll of the dice. Parker doesn't look anything special but he has got himself into a nice position. Be interesting to see if comes back to the UK to fight next. If Joshua beats Pulev then a unification fight with Parker looks more likely than one with Wilder if he comes through Ortiz. Given Parker is based in Las Vegas I wonder what his profile is like in the States. I don't see Wilder v Parker being as big a money making fight as Parker v Joshua. Also, I think having the WBO belt will be tempting for Joshua as it is an additional bargaining chip for a fight with Wilder.
I think Hughie is strong enough. He might not be the most powerful puncher - and he never will be - but he's 234 pounds and has fine leverages for adequate punching power. Any boxer his size has the physical equipment to produce a hurtful punch. The problem is technique. He was so determined to backpedal and stay away he didn't commit to any punch. Lifting weights and packing on muscle won't help anyone punch if they want to backpedal and flick away with light taps. Honestly, if someone like Klitschko or AJ adopted that style they wouldn't ever dent a grape either.
A minute an a half into round 10, Parker just launches a right hook but Hughie’s gone in a flash, stepping to his right and Parker ends up falling into the ropes. That epitomised the fight for me because that moment of great defensive footwork should have been followed by an avalanche of shots from Hughie, instead he threw one hook to the body and 3 further half hearted shots that all missed. I noticed WBN scored it 116-112. I had him by 2 rounds. 118-110 though...shocking. Even the people on here who had Parker winning haven’t come out with scores like that. I get that people don’t like the Fury’s/or don’t like that style of fighting but has boxing fans I think you have to be worried by scorecards like that.
I'll be honest, I'm not keen on watching Hughie again but when he does come back he needs to fight top fighters. I'd like to see him in with someone like Jarrell Miller.
I agree that it's hard to develop any power on the move. A few hw ever manage to do it. Most just stand and bang . He played the right tactics but perhaps was a bit cautious and prob scared of Parker strength. Tyson when he was obese had some lacklustre performances he can build on this I'm sure He also seems to follow Tyson with his good engine. Just needs to set his feet sometimes
Have you ever sparred or fought a real runner like Hughie ? You can't land when someone is running scared all the time and doesn't want to engage at all. That's where sane judging criteria comes into effect and by default gives it to the guy coming forward. Running isn't legitimate defense. Get a grip.
All this blluthis being spouted, give the guy a break . He is only 23yrs old and does things his own way, and so he should. He is not guided by the elite, he is guided by himself and with good people around him, who in time will get the message across to many. People should not ridicule, or pass any form of judgement on anybody who is simply trying to get on in life. I would love to give up my state owned arse and live as freely as these guys do. Gypsy John Fury is a great guy.
