Where does Hughie go now?

Find it hilarious how people allow their hatred to blind themselves from something so obvious. Or perhaps it's a flat refusal to acknowledge the obvious?

Hughie is evidently a highly talented up and comer. One of the most talented young heavyweights out there in fact. He's 23 years old, was out of the ring a long time, stepped up several levels and in my opinion, he won the fight by two rounds. Parker landed next to nothing.

In regard to his 'poor' offense, he landed the best punches of the fight, two or three of which were absolute peaches that stopped Parker in his tracks. He ain't ever gona pack dynamite in his fists but if he sits down on his punches a little more, sharpens up with activity and inevitably develops as a fighter through his mid to late 20's, he'll be a hell of a fighter. His footwork, head movement, stamina and chin are top class. He'll have learned so much last night, invaluable experience for a kid.

Where does he go from here? Boxes his way back into a mandatory position and next time, he'll win the belt! People acting like he's 35, he's bloody 23! Massive potential.

 

I would like to see him fight Joshua so he can get a good hiding in front of all the deluded fury clan.

 

His feighnting and jab is a thing of beauty.

People go on about his jab being terrible. The truth is its one of his biggest strengths. He just doesnt know what its for yet. Hes using it as a point scorer. When infact in his case its a set up punch.

Should be mixed up between a point scorer and a set up punch. Hes using it solely as a point scorer atm. It lost him the fight last night.

 

I’ve criticised his unwillingness to throw a few more shots but at no way was he running scared. He used the ring, I didn’t see him hopping out into the crowd. I’m not just on about his footwork, it’s all aspects of his defence because Parker closed him down plenty of times and threw big shots, but Hughie slipped, weaved, blocked and tied him up. He took Parker’s tools away. I can understand the judges giving it to the aggressor but at the same time the aggressor has surely got to land? Otherwise, Duran was winning that second fight with Leonard by a country mile.

 

Peter mentioned the possibly of him fighting Lucas Browne in March has they both want the fight apparently.

 

They have both trained with each other before, and then failed drug tests. What could possibly go wrong?

 

I agree, Hughie has potential.
But I don't think the attitude of his team towards the decision is going to help. I think they ought to admit he didn't quite do enough to win Parker's title.

There's a fine line between stick-and-move boxing and running/non-engagement. And Hughie was on the wrong side of that line the other night.
When they admit that they can get working on making the right adjustments.

 

Defense isn't about running around the ring like a headless chicken staying well out of range of not only your opponents punches but your own as well. According to you he took away Parkers tools, but he took his away his own tools in the process as well! Actually he left them at home. When at times he got run into the ropes by Parker, he also just tried tying him up and smothering him.

Once again - nothing to be praised or to be stood in wonderment by. It's something to abhor. Hughie simply refused to box. If you don't want to box, don't step into the fking ring. And don't claim to win a fight that you never really wanted to participate in.

Also why would you even try and justify the utter garbage that was dished up by Fury on Sat night to an expectant crowd. It was s.hit!

 

You nailed it. I'm bewildered why a such a hard, pitiless "fightin' man" who was supposedly beating up 30 year olds in car parks at the age of 10 refused to fight little Joe Parker in the pocket...at all. and this guy was going to deliver a 4th round knockout. The Furys reckoned that they had this pudding cooked months in advance and all Huey needed to do was to show up and still be standing when the final bell rung. Well, they cooked up quite a pudding all right... a xxxx one of which they've had to eat every ounce.

 

Hughie v Malik Scott would be interesting. Although they'd probably end up running into each other.

 

What idiot would tell their fighter to sit in the pocket with an opponent who can seriously bang (78% KO’s) when they know they don’t have the pop to put a dent in them? Parker has never even been knocked down, never mind stopped. He has a serious chin.

The plan they had was the right one, which was to keep moving, switching, win the fight from the outside with the jab and counter shots.

Peter Fury has said he asked him to use the right hand a bit more, Hughie didn’t and he lost. He only has himself to blame. I’m not disputing that.

His defence when Parker steamed in was bang on. It’s ugly but it’s effective. Not taking shots is half the job done. He’s not your bag and I respect that, but personally I really like the defensive/spoiler kind of fighters...to not get hit is a serious skill imo.

 

Hughie almost fought the right game plan.
But he did need to commit to his punches more, and punch more often. His flicks were landing short and were too light to score much anyway.
It's not about being a "power puncher" or punching as hard as you can, but you do have to at least commit to the punches a bit.

 

The Furys bang on and on about how tough “fightin’ men” they are and Hughie was sure ready to lay a beat-down on Parker at the weigh-in, but in the ring it’s ironic to see Fury dance around all night on the back-foot flicking out a lazy jab and occasionally tossing out a few other slaps. True to form, the Furys told anyone that would listen that Hughie would brutalise and KO Parker. But, one can’t brutally KO someone or even take his belt by running around the ring flicking a weak jab, holding excessively, and throwing a few halfhearted slaps. The Fury's plan was to win this belt primarily on the promotional side of side of things and their plan failed. Boxing, as a sport and a business, won on Saturday night.

They were desperately trying to sell a sinking ship of a promotion mate, he’s not going to say “i’m gonna edge him out on points”. Fighters often say they’re gonna spark their opponent (Eubank jn says it loads). Boxing isn’t always about going toe to toe, you know that, it’s about so many dynamics. It’s about ring intelligence. Hughie is a tough kid, but he’s not stupid.
