nothing wrong with salido chin punch that dropped him was the same one that did iron chin ponce haya landed huge left hooks
Yeah, it would be a massacre. Donaire has no business at 126 yet IMO, even though Lopez is made for him.
What about the Filipino last time out? Dropped, HEAVILY twice and literally having to wrestle his head back into the game.
Who knows, there's no real point in saying ''back to the drawing board'' because it more than likely won't happen at this stage. He could've realised it was time to actually use his ability to box more after the Mtagwa scare, but he didn't(the Luevano performance was - in my opinion - more down to Steve's style rather than Juanma trying to change anything up). Or after getting dropped by Bernabe fizzucking Concepcion, but he didn't. Or after getting stopped by Siri, but he didn't. He's a damn good fighter that fell in live with his power to a baffling extent. He doesn't have great skills or anything, but still better than the majority of fighters at 122/126. And when his ample power is factored in he made quite the package. He sacrificed finesse for ferocity though, and as a result I don't think we'll ever see the old JuanMa again. As CatMan said, at one stage he was one of the best around offensively. I know Gerry Penalose was far beyond his best days, but even still you can't help but look at that attacking display and not be impressed by it. His technique - the right hook to the body in particular - used to be excellent, and nowadays that punching form is almost non-existent. I'm pessimistic regarding his future as a result. I don't think he'll bother to fix his deficiencies, and frankly I'm not sure if he'll ever be the same fighter again after the sustained punishment he's shipped. Ideally I'd love him to get back to his old self and hone his skills again against mid-tier opposition before stepping back to world level as a rejuvenated force. Realistically that won't happen, so if he's going to continue in this vein I'd picket for a Jhonny Gonzalez fight. Two powerful, vulnerable dudes squaring off should make for some fun, and compensate in some capacity for the fact JuanMa has continuously failed to repay my faith.:verysad
I forgot, he was gold against an ageing, but crafty and ridiculously tough Penelosa. That was his most impressive win. Agree with 'Pab wholeheartedly on Luevano as well. And on Gonzalez Vs JuanMa :tong
The fact is that he's not taking it and he's always been hittable. Gamboa showed he was levels above Salido by beating him with a fairly lacklustre showing. I don't see how he's relevant here? Also, who was that Filipino, I still don't know who he was, his pedigree as a puncher etc etc
I want Gonzalez v Lopez as it would be an absolute war. Other than that I think Lopez needs a couple of 'wins' then go for a fight against an ageing John or Caballero or even against Dib if they can get the fight made. I think he has enough left in him that he can wins those fights although the risk is high for him now. If he beats one or two of these guys then he can have another big payday fight with either Gamboa, Garcia or Salido 3 should he even want any part of him again, he'll lose but he'll make it fun while it lasts. Much of this depends on how he makes weight though, if he moves up then hre can probably win a strap but he gets beaten down by Uchiyama, Broner and Magdelano. he could have more classics with Martinez, Salgado and Burgos though.
Weng Haya, just over a 50% KO percentage. To my knowledge they were relatively big finishes when he got them though, at least the ones leading up to the Salido fight were. The fact that he's not very good is the main reason it's not higher.
He's been in some tough wars and just needs some time out. Maybe have one or two soft touches to get the confidence back and then see what's available. Tell you what, a PDL rematch could be interesting at this point. PDL has tightened his technique up since that loss and JuanMa has regressed a bit. If he wants to move up to 130 then an all Puerto Rican clash against Rocky Martinez would be fun.
