In reference to that thread, I didn't mention Wladimir at all. And I didn't really state any opinions regarding Vitali beyond the fact I think Bowe was better. Top 3 is crazy? For Larry Holmes? It's a pretty common ranking, actually. :smoke
No. I'm just not filled with western/American bias. Holmes never got the credit he deserved when he was a boxer and when he immediately retired. Same thing with Wlad, as time goes on his stock will rise further.
Top 10. Against the super heavies of our generation I think he beats Bowe and Lewis but loses to both Klitschko's. In before the insane pro Lewis following appear I think Lewis beats Wlad prime for prime.
No. Apparently your bias lies with Eastern European fighters... Holmes also never got KO'ed by the likes of Sanders or Brewster while in his prime. Wlad DID which is why any *reasonable* boxing aficionado would exclude him from the HW top 5 all time. Honestly, Wlad doesn't even belong in the top 10...
thats because you look back on holmes and can say - dam , that guy was one of the greats he left behind great fights and performances that will always keep his legacy alive. his feats and achievements are there to stay in the record books. a look back at wlad is a reminder of why his hw era was one of the most lowly points in the divisions history. so bad that the emergence of a few skilled guys today is enough for people to already call this era a golden era of heavy weights.
Ok. Just wondering the criteria as, me personally my top 10 H2H would be different to my top 10 overall legacy/achievement.
i have at least 30 guys ahead of him from a pure skill and talent point of view. wlads standing is by way of default of having reigned. if you haven't a great level of boxing skill , you're not a great as far as im concerned. putting a guy who went life and death with sam peter and couldn't beat him two times without blatant and constant fouling in at #5 as the greatest hw boxer to ever live is a sick joke.
How exactly? A heavyweight champion who reigned for 10 years (only Joe Louis reigned longer). A guy who made twice as many successful defenses as Muhammad Ali, four times as many as Jack Dempsey. 25 title wins. His record speaks for itself. I looked forward to Klitschko getting beat and I'm going to be supporting Tyson Fury come July 9th or whatever it is. But you have to give credit where its due. Klitschko was a fantastic athlete and boxer. If he was an American we wouldn't hear the last of it. But Wlad WASN'T in his prime in 2003 and 2004. Any *reasonable* boxing aficionado would recognize that what made Wlad great was like many great boxers.... his TRAINER. And that guy was Manny Steward who made him one the most dominant heavyweight boxers of all time.
