Talentwise he was an ATG but the division was weak during his era therefore his resume is too poor to be considered an ATG. Love watching him fight though, outstanding figher.
I never had him ranked as the best fly or feather in the world. I only rank him as the best at bantam between 65 and 67. Sorry to offend one of your favorite fighters. Keith
Which pretty much tells us you haven't seen the Pone Kingpetch fights or the first Johnny Famechon fight.
So what Flyweight was a better fighter? Pray tell. The fact that I'm defending him with a post doesn't make him one of my favorites, it just means that I don't react well to ignorance.
I didnt think it was even debatable that Harada was an ATG...even considering that term has a fluid definition that depends on the person. By even the strictest interpretation of ATG I cant see how you could leave Harada out.
I think Jeff Fenech - champ from bantam to feather and robbed at super feather - and Khaosai Galaxy - massive, strong, power punching super flyweight champ - were considerably better than Canizales.
No way Galaxy was "considerably better" IMO...Orlando was more skilled, fluid, faster and all around better. And really Galaxy's record is no better then his. Fenech I wouldnt put to far behind Canizales ability wise...But his record is better fo sho. Jeff is the greater fighter and criminally underrated in some circles.
Canizales was light-years ahead of Galaxy skill-wise, though Fenech may've had the style needed to beat him. Then again, I probably wouldn't be comfortable favoring the greener, 118 pound Fenech against a prime Canizales. He's the best Bantam since prime Zarate.
I have to disagree with that. Fenech's win against Azumah Nelson is clearly better than anything on Canizale's resume, but in terms of abillity they are different styled fighters but I think Canizales was superior technically. Fenech has the edge in strenght and maybe some intangible qualities. Canizales was far better than Galaxy technically and Galaxy has the same problem as Canizales, thin on resume.
Orlando just didn't have that huge career defining fight. Honestly, when I hear the name Canizales. I immediatley think of Gaby's brutale destruction of Richard Sandoval on the undercard of Hagler-Hearns. Or was it Hagler-Mugabi?
Orlando's accomplishments were eclipsed by JC Chavez... in that he did not get much press. The guy ranks in the top 3 in his weight class ever.
Here's what Osuna has to say about him. Skip to 1:50 [yt]A50Fqgg_KOk[/yt] He makes a little blip when he says "before there was a best p4p, he was p4p the best" but I think thats more of a figure of speech.
Canizales had skills, but he didn't dominate that many of his challengers. Some feel Hardy and Reyes beat him in their first bouts. At his best Canizales would step in, punch, step out in a zig zag motion. However, it was more of a gimmick than great skills - and he needed the opponent to stand still right in front of him, to pull off the trick. He threw great hooks, though, to head and body. Canizales has got into the HOF because he was widely seen on TV and because of his decent record. Canizales was SO disappointing in the Vazquez fight, and didn't show anything extra special to change the fact that he was losing to Junior Jones: these were by far his 2 best opponents. Honestly, what is the big deal with Canizales? He got winded - or simply confused - in the middle of many fights. He was not a DOMINANT FORCE in the ring, not particularly. Galaxy and Fenech were. They might have been technically rougher but they had freakish strength and they knew how to break ppl down, brutally. Fenech beat better opponents and had continued success up in weight (unlike Canizales) and Galaxy went on a more impressive run without controversy, without lucky wins - with domination.
