It doesn't matter where Bernard was rated.

We can see by watching the fight back how good he was.

I don't think James would have toyed with him.

    You're very ignorant.

Again, it doesn't matter if you think it was a dud.

    It's how their styles meshed.

If they'd have rematched each other in 2002, I would have expected that to have been a very tactical fight too.

How is any of the above relevant?

Ok. I've got April 93 online as

    Title Vacant
    1. Julian Jackson
    2. James Toney
    3. Reggie Johnson
    4. Roy Jones Jr.
    5. Mike McCallum
    6. Sumbu Kalambay
    7. Gerald McClellan
    8. Lamar Parks
    9. Bernard Hopkins
    10. Thomas Tate
Perhaps they moved McCallum and Toney out due to looking to fight in higher divisions.

The Ring usually contained rankings and fight result dated 2 months earlier. Annual rankings could be delayed until May issue.

It's a good win at the time and a very good one with hindsight. A "great" win would be if he beat him peak. Toney was a "great" win.

Yes but they were rightly ahead of Hopkins at that time.

Hopkins didn't go on a tear immediately afterwards. He had a hiccup with Mercado before avenging and then really ramping up. Hopkins himself said the Mercado draw was the turning point of his career and thereafter he at his best, or something similar to that.

    Absolutely.

I totally agree. Even at that stage the talent was frightening. By the time he demolished Tate just 12 months and four fights later he would be comfortable and fitting in the ring against any 160 pounder in history imo. He beat Toney next fight.
