Freedie Steele, former middleweight champ, yet was a bit past it, and suffering from injuries when he finally won the championship. He beat a lot of future champions as well, but they were generally before their peak as well.
In what little film I have seen of Freddie Steele he looks impressive ,fast hands with good power, but his time at the top was brief, possibly it came a bit late for him .
I really think he should get more love then he has. He started fighting when he was 14, and by 20-21 had more fights then most people have in their career. He did beat some big names, but at the time they came hurt his resume. His opponents were either too young, or just past their prime. Babe Risko, Gus Lesnevich, Fred Apostoli, to name a few. He was also the only fighter to ever stop Ken Overlin in something like 150 fights for Overlin Until the very end of his career he had beat everyman he faced, which included rematches. Steele had said he actually won 160 of 165 bouts, which is possible, given record keeping at the time. But, it is also possible he lost more bouts. His official record stands at 125-5-11 (60 KO's) Don't let the KO percentage fool you. In his prime he was knocking everybody out. Remember he started fighting at 14. I can't reallly say where he belongs on a top-ten list. Or, if he even does. He certainly has to be near there though. I'll leave the list making to the middleweight experts here. He fought the later part of his career with a debilitating injury to his breastbone actually not allowing him to raise his arms. Boxrec stats this happening in his second to last fight but he actually received this injury at least five fights before that, meaning he beat people with a broken breastbone.
