Where Does Today's Loaded Welterweight Divisions Rank With The ATG Divisions?

I think alot more of these guys at the top of the division are B+ fighters on a true scale instead of anything in the A range. It's unquestionably a deep division because of all the 'good' fighters there, but I don't see it as being ocean deep the way that some people seem to.

 

That division was great. Boxing needs it one of those.

 

Exactly. That's the way I look at this division. There are without a doubt, good fighters but really none are truly an A grade when you look at past eras. The division was a lot more entertaining when Floyd and Paul were still full time in the division. Imagine this division 10 months ago with everybody including Floyd and Paul, then add Pac and Hatton. Now that would be very entertaining.

 

Not very high, behind the 70's 60's & 40's for sure

 

Floyd would do alright but he isnt a welter and just isnt that convincing there.

The others would get destroyed by a lot of the best fighters of the eras mentioned..And I gotta say even your man Big Paul.

 

I think the WW division from 10-15 years ago was better. Tito, DLH, Whitaker, Quartey fought in a better division than the one today.

 

It is not that strong. There are a lot of good evenly matched fighters.

Consider SR Robinson, SR Leonard, Hearns, Oscar (prime not **** ant), Tito, SSM (prime)

How would the modern WW division fare against these guys?

Antonio Margarito: loses UD to every fighter above, might get KTFO by Tito.
Miguel Cotto: gets KTFO by all
Paul Williams: his size probably gives him a stylistic advantage over some of the fighters. I think he loses more than he wins.
Andre Berto: definitely loses to all
Shane Mosley: today's SSM loses to his prime and the rest by UD
Joshua Clottey: loses UD to all
Louis Collazo: causes stylistic problems but definitely loses UD, given the fact he can't get a decision in his favour.
Floyd Mayweather JR: Gets KTFO by most of these guys. This guy is a small WW who has handpicked his opponents at WW. The list above will manhandle him.

So, although it is a decent group as a whole, its individual parts are not ATGs, except for SSM and PW (his career is still young). Note PBF is an ATG at lower weights.

 

He can get fights @ 147, he just can't get the fight he wants.

 

Even a relatively bad era, like the late 80's, with the likes of Simon Brown, Marlon Starling, Buddy McGirt, Maurice Blocker, Lloyd Honeyghan and Mark Breland is superior to the current era.

 

In recent times, that brief time when Barrera, Morales, Pacquiao and Marquez were at superfeatherweight tops todays welterweights.
