I honestly think Cotto's career will be rejuvenated by Emmanual Steward. I saw huge improvements between his last two fights in footwork, stance, and use of the jab. Look for yourself below . . .

    Steward's definitely good for him..
I really hope he has a lot left in him aswell, he's my favourite fighter and watching him is a pleasure.

I think he has at least a good few years, and he's still improving so who knows!

I think Steward will certainly help him. But I think since moving up he is going to have to be very careful in his matchups, which means we might not get the best ones. So it might also not be the best indication of how good he is or isn't.

He should have had Steward from the Clottey fight on, having such an inexperienced trainer for what was arguably the biggest fight of his life (which i believe he wouldnt have won no matter the trainer) was a big mistake. He could have done alot better with a better trainer.
I think he has alot left in him, he might not be the force he once was pre Marg, but he's still a top class fighter, shame there arent many favourable 'big' fights for him at LMW

I hope so I want to see him fight more and get a little more victories to get him a secure place in the Hall of fame. A victory over the faded Mayorga and a rematch victory against Margo will certainly put him there.

    good post and good thread

i'm honestly reluctant to say too much as cotto looked rejuvenated against a perfect opponent for him with a bum knee in foreman

hatton looked back to his best against paulie but it was an illusion

the cotto of old was a brilliant, grinding fighter, who had a wicked bodypunch and fought anyone. that's also the cotto of new. earlier in his career he fought guys like judah, corley and pinto who were tricky but perfect for him as they were too small, chinny or just not QUITE good enough. as he moved on he fought a much better opponent in mosley and proved himself but his win wasn't empathic, much as his fight with clottey was. the margo fight sandwiched in between showed all his strengths...and weaknesses.

the problem with margo fight is that it might have shown his ceiling as a fighter: he can always, always grind down fighters who he can hurt and outbox and outwork fighters with low workrates who drop rounds but can he consistently outbox and outmanuever someone who keeps throwing and keeps on coming forward? can he adjust? no and that's one of the reasons people love cotto. he seems as honest a fighter as he is a person :bbb

Let's be honest here, He is at the end of his run.
Love watching Cotto fight, But with every fight (Against = Comp) he takes a beating.
(Since his 140lbs days until now.)

Mayorga fight will be a big test. (To his ability to take)

Cotto has had plenty of months to learn from Steward. Can't wait to see what he looks like when he fights again

I think he's got about 3-4 good performances or so left in him.

I wish he would move back to 147. At 154 I can imagine him losing to lesser fighters simply because he isn't big enough for the division.

I'm with you on that one, boo. Cotto's never been one to duck or match make selectively, but at 154, I think he's going to have to in order to keep winning. I'd like to see Cotto-Berto, myself.

If he can make the weight easily it would make perfect sense.

Comparing Cotto to how he looked against little old Yuri Foreman to how he looked against Pacquiao is not a clever way to get your point across :nono

Where is Cotto in his career ?? its a great question , i beleive he's still dangerous and matched in the correct manner can string out another 4 years of good paydays and a couple more world titles along the way , is he past his very best ?? i beleive he is , should he be fighting @154 ?? , against the right opponents yes , can he beat the worlds best 154 lb'ers ?? (Williams , Martinez , Angulo etc) IMO No , therefore i see the best thing for Cotto to do is flit between 47 and 54 opponent dependant , providing his body can acheive this .

Going back to your original point , if you allow Cotto to dictate the pace of a fight , your in the **** , if you have the strength and chin to walk Cotto down you have the beating of him , this is provided in your illustration of Foreman Cotto & Cotto Pacquiao , and for that matter Cotto Margarito compared to say Cotto Judah ............

I think the Mayorga fight is great for Cotto and i think Margarito is shot and Cotto may beat him next time round also , but that 2nd Margarito fight may take everything left in Cotto .

One thing is for sure , its been a pleasure following this great great man through his career

    Much love Cotto :good
