It is weird. Modern boxing fans has a way of declaring fighters washed up or damaged good after one defeat. Just a generation back, fighters normally had 2, 3, 4 or even 5 defeats and they where still considered great. Why is that?
Agreed. Good point. I think its all about the money and marketability. Perception is reality. If people think a guy is shot, they won't pay to watch him. If he can't get the big fights, and bring in the bucks, he becomes a high risk/ low reward guy. Nobody likes to fight those guys.
I think he has hit a ceiling I cant see him beating the best guys in his neighborhood Floyd Manny Martinez all beat him he took beatings from Manny Margo and Clottey (yes he won but he took punishment) In my opinion the Yuri foreman fight proved little Cotto did not attack the body something he does less and less though it got him to the top especially now vs taller guys with bigger torsos to hit Yuri won the rounds where he punched but most of the fight he refused to let those hands go I think the blue print for Cotto has been made A tough chinned volume puncher is his silver bullet Margo started the trend by walking through the artillery and dishing out big late wearing him down
Well it goes beyond money. People undermine not only the boxer but any future fighters matching up with said boxer. If we called every boxer shot after first major defeat it would distort every ATG fighter there is - SRR, SRL, Ali, Duran, MAB, EM, Joe Louis, etc. It is just haters hating. There is really no logical explanation for it.
that and fighters fight way less now back then you lost and you got right back in the ring now you lose the precious 0 and you sit on the sidelenes for months
in the last 13 months he's only had one fight and it's against Yuri Foreman, a guy I had never heard of before he fought Santos on the Pac vs Cotto undercard. worst part is that his next fight is scheduled to be Mayorga, who hasn't had a win of note since 2003.
