The golden days of boxing are filled with Italian all-time greats. What happened to the Italians and why don't we have Italian boxing superstars anymore?

Were there Italian greats? I know the Italian/Americans but none that were actually from Italy.

Matchroom launched in Italy last year and I definitely think having a promoter putting on regular events like that will help grow the sport. The biggest issue from the last is the sport has moved on and many countries Italy included have been left behind from a training standpoint.
The main reason for this is lack of funding by the government in grassroots boxing. It’s the reason UK, and many of the Eastern European countries produce a lot of tip level fighters for the size of the country.

Wasn't Sumbu a product of the local amateur system in the Belgian Congo/Zaire?

Yeah, Young Corbett III and Dullio Loi are both greats from Italy. Italy has quite a weak collection of great fighters compared to Italian-Americans.

    From his wiki
"He was born in the Belgian Congo, moving to Italy during his youth, which is where he learned boxing and he still resides."
