Regardless of the fact he moved up 2 weight divisions to challenge the matrix. Quitting surely damages his p4p ranking. So where is he now? Top 10? Outside of top 10? Discuss.
I say he stays the same. No shame in losing while going up to weight classes to fight the consensus p4p number 2-4
Fought six minutes with a guy who has gone life and death with Josh Wale and three minutes with the Mexican version of Andre Dirrell. Rigo's was basically a protected rating, on account of him beating Donaire almost five years ago, until notice was given. Forget P4P, he'll be lucky if he isn't on a one-way train to Palookaville after the last four years he'd had. I always thought he was overrated P4P, anyway - I would've had him creeping up in back when he beat Donaire, but not as high as others had him, and I certainly wouldn't have protected his rating for as long as it's been protected.
He showed no heart in the Loma fight. But he still deals with everyone at 122 and 126 with ease. To be honest, he has stated he could go down to 118 where he could have a fight with Tete.
I'm not at all convinced that's so. I'd like to see some kind of evidence in whatever time he has left.
Outside mine. He has 1 elite win but even the Donaire fight for me came at a time where Donaire starting believing too much in his power and was just looking for one big shot (worked in other fights but not vs Rigo)
Not only that, Donaire's reputation was somewhat aggrandized. He relied a lot on opponents bringing the fight to him and tended to look less brilliant when they didn't. The styles suited Rigo, as Donaire was always going to be forced to bring the fight. Still, certainly a win to take notice of at the time.
Hard to put Rigs over guys who are more active than him, but not as talented. As long as he isn't retired, I'll still have him in my top 10. I feel sorry for Flores if the WBA lets Rigondeaux defend.
Quigg, Galahad, Selby, Russell, Mares are just a few fighters at 126 who have more to gain with a win over a Rigo than any other opponent they could face. It's the only fight where they could expect good money to face Frampton/LSC. LSC and Frampton will always be protected and can fight any bum for decent paydays.
Outside top ten for me. There's a caveat that a win over a fellow title holder catapults him right back up there. Let's get this right, Rigo is an absolute great fighter, one of the best to ever lace them up. But I'm not sure how much he has left, and it's years since his last elite level victory.
