Various answers I've seen are at Cruiserweight, the Foreman fight and the second Bowe fight even! Whats your opinion chaps?
As a fighter? Ability-wise, Cruiser. Achievement-wise, 89-92 at Heavy. But he was clearly using at some point in that phase, so I am loathe to give him too much credit. I refuse to rank him amongst great Heavies in history on that basis.
Agree with 89-92 His jump from cruiser to heavy has to be considered prime years, you don't do something like that outside of your prime peds or not Peds definitely contributed to his hw longevity, but I would say he was out of prime before 96, the fact that he went the distance/decisioned Stewart at hw and started racking up more losses after that could be a signal of the end
It's hard to say at Cruiserweight i feel like he reached his absolutely peak in 1988 after destroying Qawi in their 2nd fight, but you could say 87 was when he reached his peak also. At Heavyweight i feel like it took sometime for him to grow into Heavyweight, but he probably started to reach his peak at Heavyweight in 1989. After proving he could battle with a good Heavyweight like Dokes, and then showing his power KO'ing Rodrigues who i believe was ranked in the top 10. I think overall Holyfield's peak at Heavyweight started from about 1989 and continued right up to the 2nd Bowe fight in 1993. After that Holyfield went through a bad patch in 1994-1995 looking like a past it fighter vs Moorer, Bowe 3. But then seemed to rediscover his form vs Tyson and Moorer between 96-97. Overall i would 87-88 for Cruiserweight. 89-93 & 96-97 for Heavyweight.
I liked him from 1988-1992 as being his prime. I think once he hit thirty, got rich and started fighting less his tenacity and output suffered a bit. Began having periodic injuries and health issues etc. also started bouncing around from different managers and trainers. of course I fully acknowledge that he was still in some amazing fights in the decade that followed 1992..
Not sure when it started but it ended in 93 with Bowe 2. Holyfield was noticeably degraded in his matches after that. His tenacity wasn’t as high anymore either as he became gun shy.
He hit his "athletic" peak in terms of speed, power, timing, endurance, etc from 89-92. He was a dynamo firing on all cylinders during those years with quick punches, good footwork, combinations, etc. Things slowly started to plateau and then decline around 93. I think he peaked as a fighter in terms of skill/ring IQ in 96, that was his last great win against a great opponent. He was slower and less explosive than his younger peak self, but was more mature, level headed, had better defense, had mastered clinching, body shots, and the head butt. This was also his peak in terms of filling out as a heavyweight in terms of strength and weight. He plateaued as a fighter with a slight resurgence in the Lewis rematch in 99 and then declined significantly after that. He only remained relevant due to generous rankings and a crappy era.
