There was plenty of complaining after Mayweather-Hatton.

I know boxing fans have short memories, but Jesus Christ! It was less than 7 months ago!

Where Cortez didn't get as much outrage as he should have, was in smaller fights than PBF-Hatton, such as Quartey-Bojorquez and P. Williams-Pakau.

Good one Joe, why don't you just stand there and let these guys get used and punching bags? Bojorquez was getting beat up so bad that even the sadist Larry Merchant was calling for a stoppage. So finally, Cortez decides with a minute left in the bout that he'll stop it.

The guy used to be a solid ref, but he's just too old.

I must agree that he took Hatton's fight away from him. Hatton is an inside fighter. Hatton would have had a better showing if Cortez let him fight off the clinch more. Either way, Hatton would have lost anyways. It's justifiable to break them up if they clinch too long, but this Soto thing is rediculous.

    Bull****.

Cortez showed his bias in both the Hatton & Calzaghe fights by clearly favouring the American fighters styles in both the fights. In the case of Hatton Cortez broke the fighters whenever they got in close for no reason, not allowing Hatton to fight on the inside, whereas in the Calzaghe/Hopkins fight he let Hopkins clinch whenever he felt like it & get a breather.

The sad thing is it takes something blatant like this for some fans to realise he's incompetent.

    :-(

Let Floyd get away with elbows, rightfully stopped Hatton's excessive holding.

Lets Hopkins hold all he likes though.

Cortez is on a bad run. He is seriously slipping and needs to consider retiring.

I didn't know about the "Brittish fighters are dirty" jibe but if its true then he shouldn't be officiating any more especially if a Brit is fighting. Officials have to be objective.

As for the Hatton - Mayweather fight, whether you think Hatton should or shouldn't be stopped for holding is irrelevant in my view. What is relevant is Cortez's inconsistancy. He allowed Hatton to hold in the Castillo fight but didn't allow him to hold in the Mayweather fight. Why?

Plus he was breaking hatton and Mayweather up as soon as a clinch occured. Good refferee's let a clinch go for a few moments to see if either boxer will throw any punches on the inside (its called in-fighting. It may look dirty but it is still an effective part of boxing). If no punches are thrown then the refferee should call for a break. You should not break up a clinch the moment it occurs.
