Personally I have this even more shocking than Douglas KOing Tyson, even though Target was a far better fighter than Douglas....
Douglas fight was a grueling affair in which Tyson took plenty of HW punishment...you could almost sense disaster building up in that match.

The Tarver KO was one punch out of nowhere....i still recall that many one punch KOs of ATG fighters...

Even Tommy Hearns never got KOd like that

Jones had a weak chin and got caught flush, he got caught flush and floored by Del Valle before this bout. Tyson was a far bigger name than Jones was.

Watching from my couch on PPV with a houseful of people. I loved it!!! I was stunned by the fact that he got knocked out with one punch but Tarver gave him serious trouble in the first fight so I felt like he had a good shot to win regardless so to me it wasn’t anywhere near the level of Tyson Douglas

Checking the result the next day on Ceefax fully expecting a Jones win and got a shock when I saw the result briefly before the page changed. Had to wait another 5 minutes before I read it again and got it confirmed.

Before this fight, many people thought that Jones had an exceptional chin.

He was also seriously discussed as a top five p4p of all time.

He was getting matched against Rocky Marciano and Joe Louis in fantasy fights, and many saw him as the logical challenger for Lennox Lewis.

When the prospect of matching him against Tyson was floated, many saw Tyson as being a sacrificial lamb at this stage of his career!

Yes Tarver shocked the world that night!

I was home asleep. Didn't watch the fight live cause I was in highschool and my parents never bought PPV or anything like that. When he got knocked out by Johnson a few years later tho I was in the arena

Jones had a great chin- almost everyone sooner or latter gets dropped.
And he didnt get stopped till he was in his thirties.
he sparred tons of people who could punch and he did it on a daily basis. Never heard of him getting knocked out.
He beat Toney easily but Toney did catch him and I never saw Jones stumble. Same with Hopkins.
Such a BS statement like saying Leonard had a shaky chin because Camacho stopped him.

Tarver was the same age. He was no up and coming undefeated prospect.

He was known as a light hitting boxer and along the lines of a 175 pound Nunn. And he scored a real nice 1 punch ko over the guy that took away some of the doubts of their first bout.

At any rate, Jones had a chance to rectify all of this with their third fight.

You younger guys have to understand what it was like to see a fighter like a prime Roy Jones ....a fighter who could touch the heel of his shoe and land a punch with the same hand ...a fighter who could put his hands behind his back, slip two punches and score a knockdown...

I was watching an NBA game. It was halftime and Charles Barkley and some other guys were sitting and discussing the game. Barkley's jaw dropped while one of the other guys was talking and he broke from the script and said that Roy Jones just got knocked out. He was watching the fight while live on camera.
