Its a clone of the JFK line " Where were you when, etc. March 8th 1971. At this time I was working in Smithfied Meat Mrkt ( London ) and I had just arrived at work, think it was around 4am, desperate to know the result, no HBO, Sky, Internet, nothing really, might have been on the radio ( sure someone will confirm ) saw a bunch of porters deep in conversation, asked longingly if they knew the outcome " Frazier on points mate " was overjoyed, wanted Joe to prevail, loved the way he fought and conducted himself, so that's how a callow youth of 17 got to find out the result of TFOTC. How and when did you guys find out.
I was three. Probably throwing toys around my room, angsting desperately over the result of this transcendent event.
So you're 12 yrs old now? I was in college in the Bronx and was totally into this fight. I can't remember if I watched it....not having any spare cash I certainly couldn't pay for a ticket and no one else had the cash for paying for the fight, so I remember reading about it the next day in the NYC papers. There was much weeping and gnashing of teeth by liberal writers about Ali's loss. I recall years later hearing Bryant Gumbel recalling how he actually cried after the fight.
I was 6 and a half and Little Red Lopez hadn't turned pro yet, so I was watching who ever was fighting at the Olympic Auditorium. Didn't know heavyweights existed back then.
I was 3. I first truly became aware of Boxing 2 years later when Frazier came to the UK to fight Joe Bugner. You could buy hand puppets of the Fighters and I had them both. The first time a fight really mattered to me was Zaire. I was so worried for Ali. The memory of my Dad coming in to wake me up for school and telling me the result is so fresh it could be yesterday.
I was about a year and a half old so forgive me if my memory of the live fight night is just a little bit hazy
