IMO this fight makes most sense financially in the uk. i cannot see it making as much in the usa and this fight is all about revenue for both fighters.
For some reason I think it will be in Vegas, but from Calzaghe's perspective this thing should be in Wales: last fight, 'sympathetic' judges. I imagine Jones would require a very sizable percentage of the revenue to agree to that.
The U.K. can generate more fans in the arena, and the pound/Euro destroys the dollar, but how much do the site fees cost in big fights in the U.K.? Can they compete with the Vegas casinos, where the ticket sales are merely a part of the money they put up during the weekend of a big fight? Does anyone know exactly how much is paid for the site fees?
ticket sales for the fight in millenium estimate approx $10 to $12 million. site fees and policing $500k approx i would guess. its used for pop concerts /etc etc much smaller events than clazaghe v jones are held there all the time.
I was trying to find more figures on the site fees that casinos in the states pay for boxing, but I couldn't find too many. It was supposed to be around $11-12 mil for Hopkins-Calzaghe (ticket sales were apparently disappointing) and $12.5 million for a non-casino for Lewis-Tyson, but there wasn't too much info. Mosley-De La Hoya I was a $5.25 mil site fee, in the Staples Center.
you think the UK fans are real boxing fans?? 90% of UK viewers dont know a damn thing about boxing they'll just watch because its joe why do you think hes got away fighting tinpot opposition his whole career its because the idiot fans over here are his main demographic
calzaghe v hopkins the casino put up $8 million but they took a big loss on the fight DLH gave them $2 million out of his own pocket to keep them sweet for future events but they still took a big loss. i suppose not many of the brits gambled a lot or stayed there and only 4,000 americans attended the fight.
Surely both these fighters would want to fight in a stadium full of 50-60,000 spectators? Isn't that the sort of thing that all sportsmen dream of?
Hmmm but I bet they never thought that as little kids when they were dreaming about glory in the ring, they'll make money regardless on this fight and they already have more than their ever likely to spend in their lives. So I don't think it is as cynical as you make it out. I think that they often end up fighting in 15,000 capacity casinos because outside vested interests. At heart, I bet they want to be like their heroes of old (Ali vs Foreman, etc) fighting in stadiums in front of a massive cheering crowd.
