Where would Hagler be ranked had he beaten SRL?

No different, he was expected to slaughter Leonard, it would have gone down like Holmes/Marvis Frazier, Ali/Archie Moore. It was a no win fight either way.

 

The loss brought him down a bit in the top 5 for me.

 

Leonard wasn't your run of the mill welterweight sure Hagler was favored, but just like Napoles elevated Monzons career a win over Leonard would of done no less. The win would of matched or surpassed even the win Hagler had over Hearns. A draw would of been fine IMO. Many felt Marvin won doesn5 change my view of him as a top 10 fighter. The victory sure elevated Leonard more than it would of Hagler that's for sure.

 

It didn't change my rating of him he is top 4 imo.

 

I doubt it would have much of an effect. Leonard was coming out of retirement and fighting at 160 for the first time. Ray looked just fine in his performance, so it'd be hard to just say Hagler beat a completely shot Leonard, but it'd still be seen as him struggling against a mostly washed up, smaller fighter. That's not going to help him so much.

Monzon beat his tough challenge at the end of his career.

Hagler didn't.

That argument in comparing 2 great middleweights would be non existent.

 

This is an interesting question, if he dominated Leonard, ie if he was a better boxer, it would largely be considered a blown up inactive Welterweight who had previously lost to Duran. It wouldn't be that highly rated

I think that's why RJJ get's underrated around here, he made beating top class opposition look so easy that everyone assumed the competition couldn't be very good.

The same thing with Jack Johnson, Jeffries trained his ass for 18 months in the biggest super fight he'd ever entered wanting to win it with all his heart. Yet it's considered a shot nothing opponent because Johnson beat him

Glass chin, no heart, roid fraud, weak opposition, cherry picker, loses to any ATG in hypothetical match-ups - no that's not underrating that's simply obvious facts by unbiased observers.

If Monzon gets credit for Napoles win what to make of May-Marquez fight which was dismissed as a meaningless mismatch.

Considering Marquez recently beat declining but still P4P№1 Pac in their third fight.

 

i had Hagler winning by a very narrow margin. but even that adds a lot to the SRL legacy and nothing to haglers
if hagler had won it convincingly i doubt it would have put him any higher. he was one of the greatest middlewights ever already and leonard was not even a ranked contender. a win over herol graham or another win against Tommy hearns at that time would have counted for a lot more

 

No, if you're being unbiased it would depend on how Leonard looked to you while being handily beaten.If he attempted good moves and you could see he still had a good amount of sharpness left it would mean more than if he was some sort of shuffling unbalanced punchbag ie the Norris fight.
