Where would Turpin have defended the Middleweight title if he had beaten Robinson in New York?

If Turpin had won his rematch with Robinson and remained World Champion for some time (which I doubt given his personal issues) where would he have defended the title?

Cerdan defended the title in America instead of Europe or North Africa but I doubt he was contractually obliged to do so because his defence wasn't a rematch with Zale.

Turpin was obliged to defend the title against Robinson in America.

I'm assuming then that Cerdan chose to defend the title in America for financial reasons perhaps because he didn't have someone like Jack Solomons to promote him.

As Turpin's fights were often promoted by Solomons would he have been likely to defend his middleweight title in England?

I am not really sure where he would fight, but I would advise him to fight in England, and kind of excpect that he would seek to.

Also in America all three judges would probably be American whereas in England the referee would be the only judge and he would probably be British.

After beating Robinson twice, I think he would have earned the right to have his next fight in his back garden if he wanted to.

So why didn’t he win the rematch? Was the win in the first fight just a fluke?

Once he was no longer contractually obliged to fight in America he could defend the title anywhere he chose provided there was financial backing.

But where would he choose to fight? If I was him, I'd definitely defend the title in Britain.

Why should the champion have to cross the Atlantic to fight all his challengers?

If they want the title they should come to him.

If you watch the first fight you'll see it doesn't have a fluky vibe to it. Turpin was huge for a middleweight, awkward as can be, and and very strong. He'd always give Robinson trouble.

He was doing very well too, in the rematch, cutting Robinson badly. Ray dug down and was able to stop him in the 10th. Had to really work for it though.

Robinson had a return clause in his contract for the first fight with Turpin.

As champion couldn't Turpin have had a return clause inserted in the contract for the rematch?

I always thought it was odd that they never fought again. I know Robinson retired after the Maxim fight nine months later but in that time he had defended the middleweight title twice.

It would've been a massive event in England, and Robinson didn't mind travelling, I think London would be favourite

Turpin could have defended his title at Wembley Stadium, I'm sure there would have been sufficient interest to do so.

There had been fights held at Wembley since the 1920's.

If no venue in London was available and they were really desperate they could have always used a dump like Villa Park as a last resort ;)

I've read lots of accounts of "real" people bumping into pro fighters and being astonished by how different the contact feels to bumping into another normal. Joe Frazier was apparently a real example of this. But I've read two accounts of Turpin being heavy heavy to bump up against. Like he was wearing armour or some ****.
