Questionable? The only thing Peter has on Morrison is chin and Peter hasnt had to take the punches Morrison took so that isnt for certain. In every other facet of the sport Morrison is above Peter.

Maybe the question should be ,how does he qualify for a title shot?

Mendoza, why do you insist on calling Vitali 'Vitlai'? Just wondering...

How could you think they haven't proven themselves yet? You are one of the old school fans who thinks a 180lbs fighter is a heavyweight, right? Haye has cleaned out everyone below 200lbs, and if you consider that most of them weigh around 210lbs on fight night, i'd say he's pretty proven. Of course he does have a questionable chin, but i never said he was invulnerable.

Okay, but you can say exactly the same about a lot of guys who have been in the top10 for a while. Firpo looked like he'd never boxed before. Patterson gets knocked down by journeymen. Layne doesn't impress me on film. Neither does Cockell but he was ranked #2. Etc etc. But they were still all high quality contenders. When someone is ranked among the best 10 fighters in the world for a longer period, i think you have to recognise him as a high quality contender.

Firpo did **** all after getting knocked out in two rounds by the champ. Layne basically became a journeyman after his fight with Marciano. The list goes on. That doesn't change the fact that they were high quality contenders going into that fight.

Louis beat Jimmy Braddock, who was in-active for 2+ years, and flat out was not good. Both Vitali or Peter would likley defeat Braddock faster than Louis did.

Speaking of Peter, I re-watched him vs Maskaev. His form was better. More stright shots. He has a hard stright left, and showed some defensive movement.

Mendoza says: Power Puncher, you did not answer my question. How many of those guys were over 36, out of the game for 3.5 years, had no warm up fights, and had to over come injuries? Zero. So Vitali has additional obstacles before he ever gets to his opponent. You must admit this.

I suggest you re-watch Peter vs Maskaev. Peter technique is much improved. Peter does not go listless, as Mercer could, nor does he have a suspect chin liek Bruno did. Heck, Bruno gasses faster than Peter. Maskaev landed some hard shots. Peter took them well. The bottom line is this. Peter is better than plenty of other champions when they lost their title to someone else. If you want to deabte that last point, I'm game.

Everyone's circumstances are different so no, there isnt another fighter whos fought in the exact same conditions as Vitali.

Is Vitali fighting at 45 against a skilled boxer? No

IS Vitali fighting against a fighter the level of Prime Foreman or Prime Hagler? No

Is Vitali fighting against a linear/ring champ? No

Has Peter beat any young contenders? No, only 39yo Maskeev and a fat old middleweight in TOney who still won the first fight

Has Peter been shown to be easy to outbox by Wlad and an Old Toney? YES

Is it easier to stay young with todays performance enhancing supplements and modern training? YES

Vitali beating Sam Peter at 36 would be a very good achievement. Its not a legacy fight in itself though. To build a legacy in today's age you need to clean the division because there isnt 1 great fighter other than MAYBE Wlad, Vitali, Haye (those are all currently big maybes)

Thats why Wlad Klitchko ranks above Vitali Klitchko because hes cleaning the division out. Vitali has only beat 2 top10 contenders for my money and they werent anything special. Wlads cleaned out a long list of top10-20 guys

Peter still doesnt have a jab and still punches wider than most kids I coach. Maskeev was 39yo and there for the payday. Not to mention Maskeevs never had much durability or defense in his prime

Peters technique is and always will be horrible. I've taught 4yos to have leagues better technique than Peter. You mention Peters technique has improved, the most notable change in Peter is he looks far fatter

ANyway this is all academic until Vitali:

    1. Signs for the fight
    2. Doesnt get injured
    3. Doesn't get distracted by politics
    4. Shows up on fight night
    5. Actually wins.

No, but Foreman was active for 7 years before he got the Morrer fight, and might have had a lucky MD Call vs Stewart to keep him in the mix, which gave Foreman a chance to be a late sub vs Moorer. Foreman was a lucky dog.

I want to avoid the Hagler vs SR Leonard fight. Who won is debatable! As for Foreman, he looked like crap vs Ali in 1974. And crap vs Lyle after the Ali fight, and crap vs Young after the Lyle fight. Foreman was down in all three of these fights, and lost two of them. Was Foreman at his best in 1974? I think he was at his best before then.

No, he is fighting the #2 ring magazine contender, fresh off his best victory and in his prime.

We agree on the first part. Yes, Vitali beating Peter at 36/37, off 3.5 years of no fights , not one warm up fight, and injuries, is a very good achievement if he beats Peter. No man in the history of the ring with those stacked numbers has ever won a belt back.

You said Louis never won a title on his 50s comeback, however Louis beat titlist Savold, because Louis previously lost to Charles, the belt was passed to Charles. If the WBC followed these rulings Sam Peters WBC belt would be passed to Wlad and Vitali would be fighting a contender not a belt holder, Sam Peter isnt a champ make no mistake

Whos to say Peter would beat Braddock, Bradock beat Max Baer who is a better version of Peter. Anyway Louis resume doesnt relly on a Braddock win he cleaned out all the fighters in his era something Vitali hasnt been interested in attempting

Firpo is an excellent example to use to define Peter. Willard in 1923 was much like Vitali--big, old, and having laid off four years. In his first fight back he fought Floyd Johnson, a highly rated contender with semi-impressive wins over Martin, Brennan, and Fulton. Willard knocked Johnson out. In his next fight, Willard was matched with Firpo in an elimination to get a shot at Dempsey. Firpo knocked Willard out.

If Vitali defeats Peter, history will judge Peter to be about like Johnson. If Peter defeats Vitali, he will move up closer to Firpo's level.

Savold as champ? Huh? I could say Peter beat McCline who beat Briggs, and Briggs was a linear champ. Let's stop with the games.

Louis was shot in the 1950'ss. I have seen enough of Braddock to know that he would be meat vs Sam Peter in the ring. Baer gave Braddock that fight. As for Vitlai, he can only fight the guys who will fight him. Lewis and Byrd never wanted re-match. You can not blame Vitali for that.

Savold was an alphabet champion, same as Maskaev. He means that Louis would today be a 'titlist' the same as Peter. That is true enough.

Savold won his recognition as champion by defeating a top contender, same as Vitali.

Savold and Charles were joint champs before Louis beat Savold.

Peter couldnt KO many a fighter- Toney, Pudar, Shufford, McCline, Hawkins. At his best Braddock has skill Peter wouldnt have faced. Obviously when Braddock was starving and injured he underperformed and only showed up to get paid. Its obvious fatboy Peter has never shown up to a fight starved

Lets not pretended Vitali is MR Avoided because hes more Mr Protected. Vitali could have fought: Ibeauchi, Tua, Rahman, Golota, Brewster, Ruiz, Valuev. But Vitali never tried to make any of those fights.
