Where would Vitlai Klitschko’s comeback rate if he defeats Sam Peter?

Here is the situation. Vitlai will be facing Sam Peter, who is in his prime, and rated #2 by Ring Magazine.

Vitlai Klitschko is 37 years olf. He has not fought since December 2004, which is means by the time he and Peter fight, it will likely be 3 ½ years of in-activity. In addition to the ring rust, Vitlai has had to battle knee and back injuries. No man that I can think of has ever come back to win a belt with a three way obstacle of age, ring rust, and a major injury against him. Not one.

In the history of gloved boxing, the only heavyweight I can recall that came back at age 36+ after a 3+ lay of to win a title was George Foreman. In truth, it took Foreman had many warm up fights, and needed three tires to win a world title belt back. Foreman lost his first two chances and was defeated by Holyfield and Morrison.

Vitlai is not having any warm up fights. The annuals of fistic glory have had several instances where X linear / Ring Magazine Champions have tried to regain their title after a lay off, at an older age, but have failed. Jeffries could not do it. Dempsey could not do it. Louis could not do it. Liston could not do it. Holmes could not do it. Foreman did it, but it took three tires, and the perfect match up for him to pull the upset. If Vitlai defeats Sam Peter, where does this rate on the heavyweight comeback scale?

It's not SRL coming back to fight a bigger, stronger ATG Hagler, but Vitali beating Peter, with the loads of injuries and the ringrust he's going to have to shake off, would be very impressive.

Well, Leonard was only 31, and out of the game for 3 years. Being 37 and out of the game 4 years is a huge differnce. Leonard's injury was his eye. He did not injury his back, shoulder, or knee as Vitlai has.

Nor was Leonard in an estimated 300 combat matches like Vitlai was with amatuer boxing, amateur kick boxing, pro -kick boxing, and pro boxing. That is a lot of wear and tear.

In truth, Hagler was on the downside of his career when Leonard beat him. In fact he was being out boxed by Mugabi ( GASP ! ) at one point until coming on late to score a TKO. The poor showing by Hagler helped Leonard make up his mind to come back.

While Peter isn't in Hagler's class legacy wise, he is in his prime, much younger, and an alphabet champion too. #2 in the world right now at Heavyweight.

I voted a 7. Not because I'm a hater, but because I don't think that much of Peter. It will make some history because of the 2 brothers holding titles at the same time.

Fair enough. Thanks for the reply, but history will remember it was an " 8 " on this poll.

Voted a 8,it would be good thinking the guy is 37 and has been off 4 years and Peter is no bum

It would be extraordinary. The problem, however, is that we all know that Klitshcko is the better fighter. It is ONLY a question of whether or not he had aged. The other example in this thread - Leonard v Hagler - there was a serious question mark as to whether Leonard would EVER have been able to beat even the faded version of Hagler.

Here, the opposite is the case.

Basically this depends only on how far Klistchko has slipped. If he comes back and beats Peter it will be impressive as regards Klistchko's conditioning and genetics and temprament. But it isn't going to be anything higher than a 7 in my view, and I will probably vote 6.

It would be a solid 8 in my book, no warm-ups, a handful of injuries, nearly 4 years inactive, fighting the number 2 guy, who many regard as the most dangerous puncher in the division, it would be one hell of a win. I personally dont like Vitali one bit, but he's a tough son of a ***** in the ring, and I much rather see a mentally tough, strong chinned fighter over the other Klitschko whose Mentally weak at the top level and severely lacking a strong chin.

If Vitali wins I will be devastated, but then finally we can crown Vitali the champion of the 2000's.

Harsh. Have you seen older versions of Joe Louis, or Ali try to come back when the were 35+. They got their can's kicked. Peter would have beaten those older versions of past legends.

Unlike Hagler, this is a prime Sam Peter. Peter is 28 years old, and has 4 wins in a row over contenders, plus the WBC belt.

Vitali mentally tough? the way he quit on his stool with 2 rounds to go against a featherfisted lightheavyweight while well ahead on the cards?

Most dangerous puncher in the division? Only from the view of a dumbass and knows nothing.

I think it is a 8 and maybe a 9 depending on (if) how he beats Peter.

BIGGGGGGG DIFFERENCE in beating a slightly past his best Hagler and Peter. I'll give Vitali credit if he does, it is a rare thing to regain the HW title after a layoff. But Peter is probably the worst number 2 Ring Magazine ranked HW of all time, I personally rank him 5th, not counting Vitali.

Very good accomplishment but definently not great.

Ruslan Chagaev and Nicolay Valuev both rank higher than Sam Peter. So does Corrie Sanders!!!

That is fair. They both have more quality wins than Peter. But they aren't black and they don't have a highlight KO reel of a china chinned cruiser...

He made a bad move that night, I agree it wasnt the best decision and kind of ***** like for fighter of his caliber to do, but after that fight in 2000 he came back full force and proved his toughness against both Lewis and Sanders. Even strong willed/tough ass fighters have a bad night, Brewster, Duran, McCall, they all quit in fights for whatever reason, but in there careers as whole they proved there toughness more times than not.
