Where would you rank Quarry if he'd beaten Foreman for the title?

Would put him top 15 for sure. I already have him top 30 area.

Top fifteen heavyweights ever (had he gotten that W) and a top 30 HW ever without it.

It's one of those wins that would be lightly regarded at the time, but highly regarded as time went on.

But it would suggest to me that smaller guys, like say, Ezzard Charles could have had reasonable chances to win against a prime Foreman.

 

If Quarry wins, then George himself is diminished. Still Quarry would of become champion and that raises him up. Add Foreman to the list of names of Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Floyd Patterson, Mac Foster, Thad Spencer and Buster Mathis.
I think Jerry goes down as a top 25 Heavy. He still lost badly to Ali and Frazier 2x a piece and past prime to Norton. So he clearly finishes behind both of them for the decade of the 70s.
He pulls neck and neck with Foreman on all time lists as George falls heavily with losses to Ali, Young and Quarry.
Quarry is viewed as a nightmare match up all time for any slugger type of heavy. Foreman is viewed as much more beatable as three boxers, counter punchers beat him.
Quarry has a big fan base so he could get overrated by some but I think 20-30 range would be appropriate and George and Norton would be in same range.

 

Top 15 or Top 20.

 

It wouldn't change my opinion of Quarry a whole lot, but it would certainly hurt the historical opinion on Foreman

 

Quarry would have never beaten Foreman. That goes maybe 2 rounds and they carry Quarry out on a stretcher. I would have liked to seen Quarry fight Cooney lol

HAD QUARRY BEATEN FOREMAN IN 1973?
Goodnes guys - he would be top ten of ALLTIME. he Defeated 9 world ranked contenders anyway , knocked out 5 and probably defeated at least a half dozen 11-20 range. He would have had movie offers that were unreal, commercials, he had all that anyway , but now on a much much larger $ scale! -Folks he would have finally climbed that mountain had he defeated they Undefeated "BIG BAD:" GEORGE FOREMAN!

on a sadder note, Jerry would have gone on to have 2 or 3 more divorce's!

 

Ken Norton once quipped had he had Jerry Quarry's losse's he would no longer be in the top ten, Well Kenny defeated 5 world ranked fighter's (Ko'd 3) Okay! Jerry Quarry defeated 9 (Kayoing 5 and 2 of those were the No. 1 contenders). Thats why he was ranked so high from 1967-75. Researching only fellow contender Ron Lyle was even close to defeating that many, none were in the top 3 or so. and mostly ranked by WBA (8) -and not Ring magazine (4) What Ken Norton held over they other top contenders although he was an truly excellant fighter was his 3 bouts and San Diego victory over Muhammad Ali.
