When you have guys like Chris Eubank who came right out and said "I didnt want to fight Jones in my prime", there isnt much you can do.
For almost a 15 year period he lost one fight and that was a DQ for hitting a guy he had knocked down and was on the way to stopping. That means no legit losses over almost a decade and a half. Over this time he won titles from 160 through to Heavyweight and beat a string of very good and great fighters, barely losing a round for several fights in a row. I think that body of work is decent enough to rate Jones on. Not saying his decline should be completely ignored, but it shouldn't take the focus away from just how spectacular he was in his prime. Definitely top 25 ATG IMO. I have to agree, even as a RJJR fan myself he fits into the ATG list categories quite well! Achivements - Six time world champion in 4 different weight classes starting at MW and going to HW (first person from middle weight to do it since 1897) which is quite an achivement. Voted fighter of the dacade, and stayed on top of pound for pound lists for nearly 10 years. Longivity - as above 15 years and only losing one bout is impresive, along with being a world champion for most of that time at various weight classes. Consistency - According to HBO only lost a couple of round for all the time that he was showen on the network, even though these are based on the oppions of Harrold Lederman this can also be true to the score cards of the judges that scored the bouts. Most are by very wide margins, and shows the consistancy that RJJR had during most of his career. Resume - This is the part that seems to be lacking really, admittingly it could have been better based on jones' skill levels. But he still has Toney, Hopkins, McCallum on his list.
calzaghe pretty much did the same to jones. I would rate jones as a top 10 ATG MW (between 8-10), top ten LHW (between 5-10), and top one SMW (since hes the only one who currently qualifies in the baby smw division). Could have been higher but PEDS knock him down belwo the top echelon of MWs
Glass jaw roid jones jr is one of the most overrated fighters of all time.. He was good in his prime, but nowhere near as good as some make him out to be.
Roy Jones isn't a top 10 ATG at MW. His only notable win there was Hopkins. Who did he beat at SMW other than Toney? Blown up Pazienza?
He did little at SMW too, but you have to aggregate in everything he did in his career as a weighting too. PLus from the SMWs noeon has come close to doing what he did, not slightly, nor would any of them beat him. Well you don't have to count exterior acheviements, but I count it as something. The only MW to win a HW belt for a century. that's astounding for a MW. I think it adds weight to his MW legacy, but I can understand it if you discount it, that's acceptable.
How quickly he fell? He didn't lose until he was nearly 15 years in the sport after cutting all that weight after going to HW? 15 years isn't a quick fall.....Jermain Taylor was a quick Fall Pavlik was a quick fall....those fighters dream of going 15 years untouchable....
The point isn't whether he would beat them, the point is he didn't fight them, and instead fought blown up Pazienza and Antoine Byrd.
it depends how you define things then, perhaps I am wrong to call him a SMW ATG. and yet SMW is a subgroup of all boxing, and Jones is an ATG of that Universal group of all boxing divisions, so its churlish to suggest hes not a ATG who fought at SMW. And yet hes not done ATG stuff at only SMW, as you say. swiongs and roundabouts.
In the backend of the ATG list somewhere around 89ish. There were a lot of guys he didn't fight and he got his glass chin smashed to pieces so many times.
