Where would you rank the winner of Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson on the P4P list?

Are either on it now? I don’t do p4p lists but seems to me that if neither are on it now then a victory for either shouldn’t make that much difference

 

Six on the list. If either one wins, it wouldn't be enough for the top five.

 

How could anyone say. This is not maths and we can not compute someone's standing as a function of the standings of both fighters only.

What if both look utterly bad? What if both look brilliant? Makes a difference, doesn't it?

Only thinking about what the other fighter represents and not looking at what they actually bring results in gross over- and underratings and many of the stupid hypejobs we get all the time.

 

#4 behind Usyk, Inoue and Bivol, ahead of Bam.

It needs to be a decisive winner obviously.

3 if Shakur. 4 if Teo

 

Exactly how you have it, at #4. To be honest you could probably put Shakur at #4 already, or maybe one below, below Bam, this would just further cement him. Whereas Teo would get a big boost from this win, I'd have him only breaking into the top 10 right now.

 

Top 5

 

Teos win over Lomachenko is better than any win on Inoue’s resume, if he also beats Shakur, he is at least in the top 5. Shakur beating Teo would also put him in the top 5.

It could be argued that Bivol should be 2-3 as it is. Yes he hasnt cleaned up multiple divisions like Bud or Inoue, but that’s considerably harder when you’re starting at 175 lbs than it is when you’re starting at 108 or 130.

Dominance in one weight for a prolonged amount of time should hold more weight than it does (no pun intended), it’s actually more rare than climbing divisions in the age of dramatic weight cuts and guys “growing” into their natural weight class’, and maybe moving into one that’s beyond it….

Edit: and maybe all of this is just evidence of why p4p is useless and non-sense.

 

Assuming a decisive, controversy free victory, in which both fighters looked at least as good as usual, I'd probably have Stevenson #3 if he wins, behind Usyk and Inoue, and the bigger Lopez #5 or #6 if he wins, also behind Bivol, Bam Bam and maybe Nakatani.

 

Absolutely no case for Shakur to be ahead of Bivol, even if he beats Teo like Bud beat Spence. The resume is too thin. He's never cleaned up a division, and Teo should have losses to Sandor Martin & Kambosos on his record. Yes, he would be the best name on Shakur's record by a long way, but let's not pretend Teo doesn't have a history of stinking the place out and performing awfully as well.

 

Almost any fighter has performances where they “stink the joint out” or perform poorly (Mayweather anyone?)

The fact that some are acting like Teo barely makes the top 10 is just evidence that he’s held to standards other current fighters are not.

He has taken tough fight after tough fight and has almost never taken a lay up, and has a couple of huge wins.

 

Lopez is very good and undoubtedly an elite fighter when he's firing on all cylinders, but there are different levels of stinking up the joint. When Shakur does it, he still wins; when Teo does it, he gets a gift decision, and he should have losses to Sandor Martin and Kambosos on his record. No top 10 P4P fighter would struggle with these 2.

I've even got Haney above Lopez and don't have him in the top 10. Shakur squeezes in because he adapts, but again, I am not overly impressed with either of them from a P4P standpoint, the way Bam, Bivol, and Inoue are. I say all this, but I think Lopez could get the win this weekend. He turns up when it actually matters, and this is arguably the do-or-die moment in his career; the stakes couldn't be any bigger, and as you say, he has a couple of huge wins. He is live here, but he's too inconsistent to be top 10 P4P me.
