I remember reading something about a leg infection from a bee sting. Anyway, Schmeling had a few early stoppage losses early in his career, before he moved up to HW.

Do you know if Schmeling had much trouble making the weight at light heavy? I know he wasn't a big heavyweight but, I can't recall ever hearing of whether he went to heavyweight because of a weight issue or just for better opportunities.

Not early on but in the 1-2 years before he moved up. He was drained enough to lose to Gypsy Daniels and that loss actually made him moving up.

sorry didnt get back earlier my internet has been down. I was just flicking through some ogf my boxing books and they held Gains in high esteem. I checked a bit out about the guy and he seemed to be pretty good but very inconsistent and was just wandering what other people thought of him. The list is basically compiled of people i either dont know a great deal about or people who i want other peoples opinions to compare to my own.
Most have the same as me but i had loughran ranked about 30ish as he beat some top boxers including Harry Greb, Jack Sharkey, Max Baer, James Braddock, Mickey Walker, Mike McTigue, Young Stribling, George Carpentier and Jack Delaney to name a few. To be fair he lost 24 fights and got beat of a few of the guys above most notably Greb 4 or 5 times but from what ive read about the guy so far he seems like a top boxer
